dip stick readings

Hello could anybody tell me why when I first pull out my oil dipstick on my 756 it shows low and when I put it back and read it again it will read full. And the stick is fully inserted. It has done this for years just curious. ED

My cub does the same thing after sitting awhile, when I check it again, it is full. So is the full reading the accurate one?

I have a 2 cylinder Onan that does the opposite. The end of the tube must be below the oil level and when the air in the tube cools off it draws the oil up higher in the tube.

I have a couple OHV Briggs & Stratton engines that do the same thing. So long as the dipstick caps are screwed on tight when the engines are fully warmed up, they'll show about as 1" overfull after the engines cool off.

To get an accurate oil level reading when the engines are cold you must remove and wipe the stick, then reinsert it and pull it back out again.

Simply means the stick has a good seal on it when it is inserted. As you run the engine, the oil level detected by the stick is lower down on the stick(due to less volume in the pan from circulation of the oil through the engine) - that level is retained on the stick. When you shut the engine down, the seal (stick cap to tube) is good enough to keep the oil from moving up the stick until you remove the stick the first time (breaking the seal). When the seal is broken, the oil in the pan rises up the tube to give you an accurate measurement. Confused you yet? (I am). bob f.

4 bottom, All the german diesels do this because the dipstick is in a tube by itself and gets an air lock in it with the oil at bottom an rubber seal at top. Chuck
