Can anyone tell me why the engine dies when i engage the belly blades and start moving...
I have a 1948 International Harvester C
We have recently tuned it up and it still does the same thing..when blades are not engaged it runs great...
is it timing or carb related?

Do a compression check to see if it's low ! It may just be to much load for a low compression motor.

Just check it to take the possibilty away .

To me, it sounds like a governor issue.

You should remove the gas line at the carburetor and see if there's a good flow of gas from the gas line. Hold a clean container to catch the gas. If there's good flow and not just a trickle pull the fitting in the caburetor that the gas line was connected to. There's a screen behind that fitting that may be clogged with dirt & rust. If it's not dirty your carburetor needs a good cleaning and all jets blown out. Make sure the float is set at the right height for your tractor. Hal

Is everything O.K. on the mower if the tractor is in neutral---does it run without killing the engine? I think Jim is right to try the choke thing--just to narrow down the possibilities.

Probable lean condition.
test as follows,
with it at 1/2 throttle, put your hand on the choke lever. put it in gear, and mower on. let out clutch, and give it a full choke for the briefiest possible moment. if it begins to get to speed, the carb is lean on the power mixture screw. JimN

Only problem is if it is as gasoline only engine, the main jet is not adjustable, dist/kero are. I think his carb needs cleaning. Many C's, mine included, run rich according to the plugs. Mine sits around too much and needs to be run, hotter plugs would probably help mine. I have tried lowering the float level -- didn't help much.
