Have I got a cheap reproduction hood?

I acquired a 1953 Super A with 1000 loader over the weekend. Something had fallen on the hood and flattened it.

Since I already had the hood off to reinstall the air cleaner, I decided to try and straighten the hood. It was like working with tin foil, and I had the hood looking and fitting pretty darned good in no time. If all body work were that easy...

What bothers me is how easy it was. The hoods on my Super H and Cubs are very difficult to work with. No matter how hard you bend, pry, twist, or bang, they fight you every step of the way. Makes you wonder how they got dented in the first place...

Were the Super A hoods made of thinner, less springy material?

While I'm at it, the throttle adjustment seems to be off. The throttle lever will go past the rear of the quadrant, and only go about 3/4 of the way up it. On the bottom end, it will shut the tractor off. Do I adjust the link between the lever and the governor, or the governor and the carb?

That 1000 loader is the coolest piece of farm equipment I have ever used in my life. Even beats out Dad's dump trailer. If only I had a 44" materials bucket for it instead of the 30" manure tines.

You can't compare the hoods on the A, B, and C to the Super H. These hoods are just a piece of flat sheet metal bent in a U shape with some holes cut in them. The Super H, Cub, M, etc. have more bends to make them appear to be stiffer. I sandblasted the hood on my Super C on the inside first and the thing almost flattened out. Then I sandblasted the outside and it came back into shape somewhat. I learned to be very careful sandblasting sheetmetal from that lesson. Roger

By flattened, I meant the normal arch of the hood across the top had been flattened, not that the entire hood itself was flattened...

All I had to do was put the hood on the ground, upside down, and step on it once or twice. It's not perfect but at least the obvious flat spot is gone...
I guess you're right... My H hood has stiffeners, and the Cub hoods have gas tanks attached. Still the sheet metal itself seems to be thinner.

It might have been through a fire, and been annealed accident. They just feel like tincan material. JimN

I think all the hoods are the same -- I can't explain yours. It wouldn't surprise me if the reproductions were somewhat lighter, but not that light. You sure you aren't exaggerating "flattened"?

Id have to say your hood is original. Dont know of anybody other than OEM who makes hoods now, and somehow I dont think their quality is bad enough to go to junk that fast. They havent been making them that long I dont think.
