Howdy, boys:

There is an M for sale on ebay with about 2+ hours to go. Opening bid is $1,400. No bids. Tractor is in KY, I believe.

This tractor has like new tires ($1,000), a rebuilt engine ($1,000), runs great and excellent sheet metal. Like I said, nobody has bid at $1,400.

Yet, some joker will bid $950 for a worn out M with bald, cracked tires, beat up sheet metal - and think he got a steal.

I see this over and over. I cannot figure it out, but it amazes me, just the same..... Go figure.

What a sweet, sweet M. mike

Hugh, you are correct about bidder behavior. I have sold stuff on ebay and usually get a higher price when I set it up as no reserve and start it off at a low price. Another thing that helps is lots of pictures, lots of description information and to tell why you are selling the item.

I agree with Spook. And, speaking only for myself, tractors are a hobby, something to work on. No use buying one if there is nothing to work on. However, there are numerous auctions in Red Power Magazine and Antique Power featuring restored tractors, so someone buys them. New tires are a plus, provided they aren't Chinese or something. Tires are the most expensive single item, perhaps next to the engine, depending on what is done to it. Tires blow my budget everytime.

With fuel prices being the way they are, location makes a huge difference in what you would pay for that item. Like others have said, sometimes the process of restoring it yourself is worth the price. As for when I sell on ebay, I usually start with a lower, reasonable bid, knowing full well it may sell for that. If it is a higher priced item, I put a reasonable reserve on it, and haven't had to have a no-sale.

Yeah, but some people want to do all that themselves. And some skeptical guys like me, would never buy a tractor or any piece of equipment over the internet. I want to see the new tires, the reciepts for the parts, the quality of the work. And I don't think the market for old tractors is very good right now.

You're leavin' out one important factor.

Tires. $1000
Machine shop bill, $700
Paint, $400
Decals, $75
Six months of nights and weekends bustin' knuckles, inhalin' fumes and gettin' greasy? Priceless!

That, and I think a lot of folks mistrust a little the quality of any mechanical work done by others. I know I got up nto the belly of an M that a fella paid top dollar for. It had obviously been worked on before hit was painted, so I wouldn't say they lied to him, but while I was up in there fiqurin' out why his clutch wouldn't disengage, I kept comin' back down with my hands covered in grit where they sandblasted without sealing things off. Had it all through the clutch and throwout bearing, etc., enough that one can't help but wonder what was in the motor. The folks thatsold it to him gave him all the receipts for parts they had put into it and so on, which is some assurance, but the work was the pits.

Mike: As amazing as it may seem, most folks don't like starting bids by the vendor. I know I just walk away. You know very well someone is going to be chasing your biding to double that starting bid. I say, if the vendor knows what he wants for it, put it in a classified. I he doesn't know what he wants put it in an auction.

This in my opinion is what sunk YT auction, 90% of it had reserve or starting bids. Good auctions and auctioneers will not allow that. Smart vendors that want to chase bids, never do it themselves.

I may be all wet here, but it seems that most want to start the bidding process @ their own starting price and just keep bidding with that glaze in their eyes, instead of having someone set a higher starting price from the get go. I would think a buy it now price with a modest reserve is the way to go on ebay. I do see what you mean though. Looks like a decent M. My 2cents, Andy
