In my parts manual, the steering shaft with the worm gear has a different part number for the M and MD. If someone has an M apart could you measure the over all length of it for me. I have two 1947 MDs and only one steering shaft. Makes it a pain in the rear to move them around. I can get a shaft for a MD but at $175 I would rather get a cheaper one from an M and make it work if possible. Thanks

You can use one from a gas or diesel MTA, 400 or 450 without power steering and cheaper than $175.

the yard I called told me the price for the 400/450 is the same as the MD $175 + tax. I going to try a few different places to get a better deal

The difference is that the MD is a little longer than the regular M. This makes the side rails, hood, steering shaft, etc all a little bit longer. I think it's about 1 1/2 inches difference, but not sure about that. So, if you get an M steering shaft, you will have to cut it and weld in a piece to make the shaft longer for the MD.
