Just picked up a Farmall A (1940) and it has the woods mowerd (L59) with it. Mower runs semi smooth. Any grass that's even mildly tall (3 inches), and it wants to bog down. I should mention that I DID NOT sharpen the blades. Would this make that much of a difference? And yes I believe I have the belt on correct. Thanks in advance

Tom

Steam/pressure wash the deck and sharpen the blades (check make sure blades are not on backwards).....Grease it...Don

Even a poorly tuned A should not have trouble with a 60" mower that's badly plugged with buildup, and turning the blades backwards...

Either the governor is not working, or the engine is badly in need of an overhaul.

if its not the engine, check the deck to be sure the blades are turning in the right direction, and check to see that the blades are not on upside down. there were reverse rotation blades available for the woods 59, so maybe the blades are wrong. also check your mower deck blades to see if the deck is set right. front edge of blades should be anywhere from 3/8 inch to 5/8 inch lower than the rear. and get the blades sharpened, makes a big difference.

I would say the problem is the tractor not the mower deck. Sounds like it needs a tune up and or maybe the carb needs some work of setting if it has an adjustable main jet. You may have a main jet that is running to lean and to lean means lower power.

Mike: Some of these guys actually think you can mow thick 8" grass in 3rd gear. I've seen guys snap the guage wheel off hitting hard ruts. I'd hate to see what happens if one gets that gauge wheel under the mower deck in 3rd gear. That's got to be how guys break their mower spindle housings. I notice he's not talking Woods mower either. I could put left turning blades on my right turning mower and it definitely wouldn't heat the tractor in 1st gear. The belt and pullies may get awfully hot, but not the tractor.

I suppose your going to tell me you have a belly mower on the 1066 and it causes the tractor to get hot. No sorry, I don't remember you regarding the subjects you mention. I can say I've seen the handle No Tools on forum discussion, that's about it.

You best take a little time and sharpen some mower blades, 1066 might blow a head gasket.

Tom: I agree with Rusty, a good working Farmall A or SA will burn the belts off before it ever lugs down. If the blades are sharp, grass 10" tall wont affect the mower or tractor. If your blades are dull the belt and pullies will get hot no matter how tight they are.

Dunno,

That L59 is good to about 4" and that's it. Just not anything but a "finish" mower.

Might cut/tear/rip/knock down taller stuff, but yer not gonna like the outcome.

Allan

Allan: It will leave the 10" grass a bit ragged the first pass, but you'll have nothing higher than 6" and most of it will be mower setting height. Like Jerry says it's got to be sharp.

If my mower is the least bit dull, quite often I'll get a wiff of hot belt. If I shut her down and belt and pullies are hot, I know those blades have lost their edge. It's not my belt loose either, it's tight as a fiddle string. In 6 years, I've yet to see my SA loose RPMs when mowing. Now, I grant you most of the time one could almost shave with the blades. I will not tolerate dull blades.

First time I disagree with you. I've mowed pastures with my Super A and 6' woods. First pass over cuts it down to 4-6 inches and two days later at normal mowing height will leave it looking like a lawn. BUT blades must be sharp, belt on correctly and tight.

I had intended to say L59 or RM59 mower, I'll not comment on the 72" mower.

I have a cub that has a lot less power than your A and it can mow ankle deep grass all day long in 2nd and not break a sweat. I think a good sharp edge on those blades should make a big difference.

If the blades are extremely dull, then sharpening them will make a big difference. Also, if the grass is wet, you will have difficulty. Keep in mind that a Woods mower is a lawn mower. It is NOT a bush hog.

Having said all that, I will say that 3" tall grass SHOULD NOT be giving you any trouble. Maybe your tractor needs a good tune-up?

I wll also comment that IF the tractor is running as it should, the drive belt to the mower should start slipping and squealing BEFORE the engine bogs down.

Just bought a super A and put a brand new woods mower on it. WOW, what a difference compared to my cub with the same 6 foot mower. Tons of power. I did volunteer to mow a fiends 4 acres. It was almost like a field, neglected, grass about a foot tall. Mowed it first time down to about 5 inches, then 3 days later took it to yard length. No problems. I do mow in 3rd gear but my yard is a yard, no ground hog holes or ruts to worry about. My tractor takes normal yard mowing in 3rd gear with ease. The 4 acres above, most of it was in 2nd because of the rough terrain. That yard was about 1 week away from needing a bush hog.
