Okay, I've been hearing it for awhile now, and even at NTPA pulls I have seen it... I have heard IH tractors often referred to as "binders".. this may not be an IH thing but that's where I have seen it. I always thought a binder was a part from on old threshing machine or square baler. Please enlighten an old fellow that can't figure this out!

Here's my Binder:

Everyone where I grew up called them Binders or Corn Binders... to me it is a term of endearment.

In the 1950s & the 1960s decades International trucks were often called "Binders". It"s a throwback to the years of when IHC made corn and oats binders. It"s a nickname to be proud of.

Here's an extract for the CaseIH web site. International Harvester's have been referred to as "binders" or "corn binders" ever since.

"1902 Consolidation - Foundation of the International Harvester Company consolidating five former harvesting machinery competitors who represent 90% of the grain binder business. In addition to the McCormick Harvesting Machine Company, they were Deering Harvester Company, the Plano Manufacturing Company, the Champion Line of Harvesting Machines, and the Milwaukee Harvester Company. The voting power for the new company rested with the sons of two harvesting machine pioneers, Cyrus Hall McCormick, Jr. and Charles Deering, plus George Perkins, partner of J.P. Morgan who arranged and financed the consolidation."

The "corn"(binder) by international harvester was one of the first mechanized corn cutters made..

To me ( older than stink) a binder was a machine pulled to cut wheat and oats binding them in bundles which we later shocked, and probably other grains. We had two and took both to the field because the incident of breakage , especially the arm that carried the string would hit the stationary piece and break off necessitating a weld job(dis it there in the field while the other was working. Pulled it with to horses for many years until we got the A in 1941.

My corn binder was horse drawn, made in Canada and is a John Deere brand.
Seems strange that internationals are called binders
