Tie-Rod Ends : Poor-Boy fix (Pictures)

This is how we repair tie-rod ends in the South! Not really, I just did this for now when I found out that complete, proper parts are about $50.00 each. That is $200.00 for 4 ends... I got a NEW, not rebuilt 17 GPM pump for $373 Shipped.

Anyone know where I can get tie-rods reasonable? Is there an automotive application that cross references? Buy a cheap automotive tie-cut end off rod, and weld to old rod (holes or threads)? I think this is a Schwartz or a Speeco WFE.
Maybe I'll just paint these IH Red and be done!

Just to second what others have already said . . . . my NAPA dealer photocopied seven pages from a catalog for me of every conceivable tie rod end. Ask your NAPA dealer to see their catalog. If you post the dimensions I'll give you parts numbers.

for a total jury rig, you would have to use baling wire in place of the cotter pins. and that's only if you used the pliers from your belt loop holder to cut the wire with.

Interesting views. I plan to repair with new parts, someday. Maybe this summer, maybe next summer. The washers I cut off to weld on my grade 8's were SQUARE and the holes were almost worn thru! I spoke to the man that welded them on and he said he welded them on 28-30 years ago. I know the welds looked rough, but I only spot welded in 5 places in case I need to replace them :lol: At least I chipped the slag off.

Charles: Well, we gave you a hard time, most of it stemed from your temporary fix. Nothing wrong with your fix and let me assure you, it's not exclusively a southern thing.

A friend of mine was into mainly truck and some heavy equipment repair, had his own shop. One evening back in the 80s he was just closing after getting truck on the road for a customer. A multi-millionaire with a 4 year old Buick pulled up. His tyrod had dropped off on the road, poked it back on to get to my friend's shop. My friend had no parts for cars so they did the big washer weld on just like you. He told me he saw the Buick in a parking lot 3 years later, still owned by the millionaire, and still running with the weld on washer. We can assume you are a man of means, and will be leaving tyrods as fixed. Haha, an indicator of wealth.

I second this..... AMEN Hugh.

I don't see why y'all are giving him a hard time on this, I doubt he is going for the concurs repair but just trying to make ends meet (literally) and get his machine back to work. Automotive tie rod end are more than sufficient and I applaud your creativity Charles! :D 8)

The front end is a Speeco. I have the ends for the front. The four ends are a little under a $100.00

May be someone come up with the info you need. I have ran into the same thing on other parts. I have a baler that gets very expensive to buy pickup teeth for. I found another source for what is probably the same part except it is not sold by a dealer for a fraction of the cost. Is it the same part? Who knows, but it sure did not cost any more to make the dealer part, and my bet is that it came from the same manufacturer. At least your fix gives you time to look around. I have found parts for a fraction of the cost just by shopping around. Don't just assume that since it is a critical part you should pay top dollar and just expect that because you paid more it must be better. Many times the part is the same, it is just the profit margin that is greater. Maybe I am crazy, but I can spend quite a bit of time on the phone to save $50.

As good as new! Heck, Dad used to build up the tierod ends with a nail.

The offroad hobby uses "Hind" joints for suspension. I'd imagine that you could weld one of these on the tierod ends and through-bolt into the steering arms.

This is a purely temporary fix. One was about to fall out, so this is what I did to last through this hay cutting (have about 40 acres to bale). Road gear is out of the question in the hay field. After I bale hay, I will take them off and try NAPA.

I posted this to stir the grey matter of viewers to help me find a source for heavy-duty tie-rod ends. Cost is not an issue if that is the going rate, I just saw them on ONE site and it seemed high. Slowly I am replacing many parts on this tractor that are worn. I felt the hydraulic pump was a priority over the tie-rods right now.

Charles: Nothing wrong with price of tractor tyrod ends. They lasted 40 years and cost $50. That's much cheaper than a $25. automotive tyrod end that lasts 7 years.

Those springs the pull back the tractor clutch and brake pedals are $30.+ and are much less expensive than anything else on market. I've seen these tractors cobbled up with automotive parts, may as well scrap the tractor and be done with it.

There probably are tie rods for other applications that would fit, but I can pretty much guarantee they won't be any less costly. Complete tie rod assemblies are readily available for that Schwartz, and the complete assembly is less costly than buying the parts individually. I'm thinking that if you have counted the time involved, you already have a considerable amount involved.

There are a few things I will not mess around with (I am not flaming, I am giving an opinion). Steering linkage is one of them. I would never drive the pictured unit in road gear with the repairs as shown. One high speed accident will cost more than 200. I believe in making things, except steering and suspension control stuff. There are bound to be cross overs. I found Ford Taurus tierod ends screw into Toyota Tercel Rack and pinion inner couplings, and fit the taper of Dana 40 radius arms. A good NAPA parts person has the info, if you are willing to determine the thread sizes, handedness, and taper of the shank. JimN
