I am about ready to rejoin the back half of the Super M to the front. I am to the point where I am bolting down the pressure plate. I recall reading something about only tightening 3 bolts initially and do the rest later, so that the clutch disc can move. Is there a particular method for reassmbly that works best? Will I need to rotate the engine at all when it is lined up--to get the splines to slide in? Thanks.

I bolted the pressure plate down and then realized the clutch pressure plate has 3 small bolts holding the pressure off the clutch disc. Consequently, the clutch disc is loose inside and can rotate freely-even with the pressure plate bolts down tight.

I haven't rejoined it yet, but will in the morning. After getting it in place, I should be able to remove the 3 bolts to allow pressure on the disc. I presume it was set up to go back together this way. I imagine it will slide back together fairly easy without pressure on the disc. The 3 bolts will need to come out the bottom opening after it is together (clutch view opening).

All good advice. I will be working on this today. Come to think of it, I have a plastic clutch alignment tool that came with a clutch kit for a truck I worked on. It may work. I had not thought of turning the PTO to rotate for alignment. I hope it goes back together easily. Thanks

When I last did my Super M, I installed all the cap screws that hold the clutch cover to the flywheel. But I only screwed 'em a couple turns - just enough to hold the cover in place. This made it easy to align the clutch disk splines with the tranny input shaft as the 2 halves came together.

Once the engine and bellhousing were bolted tightly back together I then tightened/torqued the cap screws all the way around the clutch cover.

Maybe I was just lucky - but the tranny spline slipped right into the clutch disk. Had no alignment issues whatsoever.

Very best way to do it is with a clutch aliment tool. That way the clutch disk is where it should be so it is then easy to slip back together. With out one you risk bending or braking the clutch disk and then you have to start all over again. BTDT

I believe I had heard that one should tighten all the bolts a little at a time, all around, so that you don't risk warping the pressure plate.

Maybe an old wive's tale.
I didn't take any chances though.

BTW, my clutch disc could only move 1/8" in any direction within the confines of the flywheel, and I 'eyeballed' mine successfully. I couldn't find an alignment tool.

And I rotated the clutch shaft rather than the engine to get the splines to line up, by keeping my tranny in neutral, putting the PTO in gear, and then turning the PTO made the clutch shaft rotate.
Mine was a Super-A though. I don't know if that translates to your tractor.

This worked great. I did not need an alignment tool. The disc was free to move with the 3 bolts holding the pp pressure off. I had some difficulting moving the rear as I was working alone and had it on plywood-no concrete. I was able to get it close enough and the shaft lined up. I then slowly pulled it together with furniature clamps (one on each side). When the spline was grabbing the disc, I turned the pto shaft (engaged). Had to use a pipe wrench to rotate it. This was the key. It then slid forward and into place. I have a couple of bolts snugged down. I will now need to remove the 3 bolts holding the pressure off the disc. The pp bolts are already tightened down.

Yes bolts should be tighten across and a little at a time. As for the clutch aliment tool any good auto parts stores sell them for around $20 and they will work on almost any thing. The good ones have many ends and other parts. I've hand one for decades and will never do a cluth job with out one
