140--coil too hot..?

I hope someone can answer this strange question. I rebuilt my 140, and rewired it, converting it to 12v. Everything is working just fine, she charges great, etc. Except...if you put your hand on the coil (it has a distributor), it's almost too hot to touch. This is with the original 6v coil. I bought a Chrysler type ballast resistor, and put that in line. I bought a 12v coil and that even feels real hot. I just feel like I'm gonna be a long way from the barn some day and something's gonna go up in smoke.. any suggestions.??

The voltage to the points is too high. With the points closed the voltage should be 5 to 7 volts.

Go to Auto Zone and tell them that you want a 12V coil for use w/out an external resistor. It will work just fine..... .....Mike

The 12v coil that I have IS the type for use without an external resistor...that's the problem. The only thing I can think is that I asked for that type, and they gave me the other at the parts store...it's happened before...ya can't tell by looking at them..thanks...gn
