I need to make a pitman for an older pto mower. What kind of wood should I use? Will spruce of fir work or do I need oak?

Softwoods such as spruce or fir are probably not a good idea. As stated below, ash is the norm, but white oak will work, followed by red oak (more commonly available).

i think ash is the norm for pitmans. i made a few and they seem to hold up real good.
