Hi everyone. Yesterday I bought my first tractor, a farmall H. My dad wasn't very happy because he claims all an H is good for is pulling stuborn chickens off their nests. I guess I gotta prove him wrong now. I bought it just because it was fairly cheap and I wanted something I could work on. What I want to know is how hard is it to overhaul this tractor? I found a kit for about $550 and thinking about taking the job on. I'm only 16 but I am fairly handy with engines. Is this a job that I could do without being a master mechanic? Also is there a lot of special tools I'm gonna need? I have the basic set of tools plus a bit more. Thanks. Aaron in Wisconsin.

Aaron Hs are pretty easy to work on. A sleeve puller and a torque wrench will be about the only tools you will need above the ordinary. Punch below and you can see what I horsed with last year. Lots of pictures. Also in the left column under research, select article archives, then page down and under restoration you will see an article on a 1951 Farmall H. That is my article on last year's rebuild.

Aaron,
It's your lucky day! If there is an expert on the H it's The Red. After rebuilding four of them suckers he knows just about everything there is to know about them. Red's right, it doesen't take a lot of extra tools to rebuild an engine in an H.
Just take your time and don't hurry and things will go pretty smoothly. Just remember to keep everything as clean as possible when you start putting it back together. Don't ask me how I know that. :o)

Phil

Aaron I have only rebuilt one engine in frame. Some fellars on this site have done far more engine and transmission overhauling then I have. I was lucky and didn't have to mess with the camshaft. If you have any serious transmission problems, there are a few folks who have forgotten more than I will ever know. You will get plenty of excellent responses.

If you cannot find a sleeve puller to borrow or rent, Ron Jacobson can fabricate an outstanding one for you. farmerron@navix.net
