Ihave recently found a Mcormick deering orchard tractor in a field. It has big rear fenders that cover the whole tires and the side flaps on the hood sweep down and curve into the rear fenders. The tractor looks to be all original except for a hydraulic steering system. The serial numbers read model u4 obh 16499 w1. I was wondering if anyone could tell me how rare it is and parts availiblity.Thank you very much.

Hi Rick. I guess I have one of your "brothers" or "sisters" of your find. I have a 1947 McCormick Deering Model 04 ORCHARD TRACTOR, Serial # 0 BH 18464 W1K taken from the name plate in front of the battery. Ive had mine 3 0r 4 years. It has spent most of its lifetime in Orange Co, CA. I bought it for $250 when a neighbor who could not take it to a new home he bought. (Lucky break for me, Huh???) One of the first things I done was to start my "searching" on our favorite websites. I found a 294 page (Parts Manual for model McCD 0-4, OS-4, W-4) for $$44.95, and a 48 page (Service Manual for models W-4, 0-4, I-4, U-4, IU-4) $29.95 from Yesterdays Tractors, PO Box 160, Chimacum, WA 98325. (1-510-665-2318). With tax @ 4.20 for a total of $79.10 it has been money well spent. I look at it as .22 cents a day for a year. These manuals have helped me immensely with the wiring, carburetion, generator. When I first got the tractor I thought it was a 6 volt negative ground. Mine is POSITIVE ground & not knowing that, cost me $87.52 for Voltage Regulater & Generator testing. Good Fenders Left Side P/N 57664 DB & Right Side P/N 57665 DA, Hood Side Sheet R. H. P/N 57688 DXA & L.H. P/N 57687 DXA must be in demand. As MEDFARM sez, "they usually took a beating". I am misssing the "Steering wheel cowl sheet attachment" P/N 58027 DAX. This protected the driver from getting slapped in the face with tree branches. Wanna sell yours????? Let me know?? I have hydraulics & a 18" x 72" blade at the rear. I can drag rocks around my house here in the desert of Lake Havasu City AZ. Its a lot of fun. Whats my tractor worth???? "Priceless" at the present time. I like to sit in my patio & admire my tractor that everybody said I was stupid for buying that "Old Thing". They just dont know that at age 77, that motor reminds me of the sound of the little old John Deere that my Dad would let me drag the ball diamond every Sunday after Sunday School in 1937. These old tractors just should remind evryone they can hang on for a long time if they get proper care. Good luck with yours. You should be proud to have found a treasure. I have found one of these orchard tractors in Florida in an old orange grove. It has all the sheetmetal and is pretty beat up, the seat is missing but the engine will turn over and the tires are still holding air! After reading your messages, I now know where the serial number is and will jot it down the next time I am over there. The sheet over the steering wheel is perforated and looks like it could be reproduced for someone (like Paul) without too much trouble. I am still negotiating a price, as there are two tractors there, the other is a farmall cub and I want them both. I hope we can agree on a price soon. I have been trying to get an old tractor for restoring for a few years. I am also looking at an old Case model C on an old strawberry farm. The best thing about this is the search. These tractors are so secluded that you would never find them but by luck (and perhaps a prayer). My father-in-law sold his JD model A before I could get to it,(complete unrestored and running for $1500) but his tractors are all up in NY and I am in Florida so I need to find something close. Just looking at these old tractors made me feel like I was 15 again. This website is great. Thanks for all the great info. I hope you guys are still out there as these postings are a bid old.

Detroit Rick

If the O4 appears to have the original swept hood and covered fenders, the tractor is somewhat rare, not so much because of low production numbers, but because the original sheet metal usually took a pounding because of the intended application. Most of the O4's went to orchard states such as Georgia and California. The O4 sits considerably lower than a W4.

Thats a 1947 O-4.The W1 indicates a gas engine. The engine is basically the same as a H.I am not sure about the tranny on those.I do know the I-4 was different. As far as rarity,I dont know, but I personally have only seen one with the full sheet metal on it.I am jealous!

Hi Rick, the obh in the serial # make it sound like it could be a model OS 4, if that is the case , then the 16499 in the serial # would designate it as a 1947 model os-4. The 04 series should have a casting # on the right side (sitting on the tractor) of the engine block that reads 6695D. Is this tractor on steel or rubber? Either way it sounds as if you have found a very collectable tractor. Would not be able to estimate the cash value, but the os-4 with all the original orchard sheetmetal is probably the most valuable of the 04 series tractors. Please let us know what you do!! Tom

The OBH means it is a O-4 which has the streamlined fenders. If it had been a OS-4 the prefix would have been OBHS and it would not have the streamlined fenders and steel windshield, etc. A O-4 with complete fenders and shielding is pretty rare.

sounds like a very nice find, the only thing that would make it better is if it was green. lol. good luck with your restoration!
