Heyas,

Just wondering what is the best place
to get paint for farmalls? Its like $20
a gallon at central tractor. How many
gallons would it take to do a whole tractor,
farmall md?

Probably try to sell it up on ebay pretty soon
for like $3k. Have to see how that works
out. Thanks,

gm

I just bought paint for my 706, which (finally) goes into the spray booth this coming weekend. I priced professional quality automotive paint and OUCH!!, don't go there. I wound up buying Case-IH Ironguard enamel, and we will use hardener in it to bring out the shine and make it more durable. The Ironguard was $34/gallon, and I bought 2 gallons. Quarts are around $12. IH used to say one gallon to paint an H or M. I think the Ironguard is better quality than the $20/gallon farm store paint. It does spray very nicely, and it will last well if it doesn't sit outside in the sun all the time. The one point that cannot be stressed enough is proper surface preparation. Spend whatever time it takes to get it prepped right, and use a good primer (Ironguard primer works well.) If you do, any paint will look good, but the better paint will stay looking good longer. Hope this helps.

Not to sound nasty, but it sounds like you are just painting it up to sell. If this is the case and you are going to ask the fairly high price you stated why don't you use a good quality paint? The prep work to look good is the hard part. A cheap paint is not going to last and is just going to put the screws to the poor person who buys what they thought was a freshly (and well done) painted tractor. I do not mean to be petty but are we really out to take advantage of one another? What is the cost to use good paint? A couple of bucks a gallon? Would you want someone to do this to you? My two cents worth.

hmm, with comments like that you might tell me what paint I should use? Since I personally
can't tell paint quality, I could end up buying
cheap paint for an expensive price. I was
merely asking for suggestions as to where
to purchase paint, which I have received very
little input on. I guess central tractor is my only option so I will go there.

Either way, cheap paint hardly puts the screws to someone since it apparently only takes two
gallons to paint a tractor. I think
when you are buying a tractor, you should
be more concerned that everything works on
it. If it looks good, that is what we
call bonus land :)

As for the price, I have seen them posted
up for $2500 to $4500. I don't think I am
on the high end of things? There
are not as many of them around as the
straight gas M.

Hey Jerry, thanks for your two cents worth. When I first read the thread this morning, I was going to write something similar but did not want to start the day with a bunch of negative thoughts. Now that I am back on the puter this evening I will add this. I hate cheap materials and shoddy workmanship. If a job is worth doing it should be done well. Everytime you walk by your cheap job, you are reminded of your incompetance.

Getting back to the paint, a poor paint job devalues a good tractor because the paint has to be removed. Of course not all people see it this way. A day at an auction will prove the point that "paint sells". I guess you can fool some of the people some of the time.

I guess you guys assume a poor paint job
since I plan to sell the tractor. You
obviouslly don't think it is a good idea to
find the best place to buy something which
is what I was attempting to do. Instead,
I get rather useless comments suggesting I am some kind of evil person. You guys were
very helpful in my search for paint, thanks.

"Just wondering what is the best place to get paint for farmalls?" gm, Do you mean, best price or best paint ? If you are brush painting this tractor 2 gallons should do the trick.

I guess best price is the main idea. If
it only takes like 2 gallons, then this
$20 a gallon is ok. But if there
is a cheaper place, that would be good.

I do have a couple other tractors to paint as well. Not looking to sell those
but might as well have them looking nice while I am using them.

I was going to try out my new paint sprayer
attachment for the air compressor. Probably
be an extra gallon that goes to waste with
spaying.
