I recently bought a 1939 F-20. It is serial# 146373. I also have an unrestored '37 F-20 which I have had for quite a while. When loading the newer tractor, i noticed some differences in them and wondered if there was anything special about them. On the tractor, mounted behind the rear seat is a hydralic pump with hoses. the unit drives off of the pto by a chain and gears. This unit looks to be orriginal, but i can't find no numbers on it. This tractor also has a different shift pattern than any others I have seen because 4th is next to reverse instead of between 2nd and 3rd. Another diffrence that dissapointed me is this tractor has no belt pulley. The seat looks to be factory but has no numbers and has the shock and spring like those on a M. If it makes any diffrence, this is an orrigional rubber tractor. I am 17 and have only restored one other tractor, a 39 H so any info or help on these parts or reasons for them being diffrent would be greatly appriciated.

Adam, Sounds like you snagged a pretty good find. I enjoy going to shows and seeing these old tractors outfitted with aftermarket accessories of their time. I think a lot of these folks would agree that it doesn't hurt the value or overall collectability of the tractor,(unless you're a museum curator)and it lets you involve it in some routine chores.

Hello Adam
The seat should be like the 37 model. If the shock is aft of the seat it's a Monroe Eze-Ride, an aftermarket seat. If it uses the short shock up under the seat it's IH. The aftermarket seat was also installed on pan seat John Deere tractors.
Farmall F-Series Photo Archive book by Letourneau has some great original photos for reference. Have fun and enjoy your tractors.

Adam: Your '39 F20 has a hispeed 4th gear. This
is why the shift pattern is different. I installed
this transmission on my 37 F20 back in January.
Your hydralics sound like they are driven off
a Charlynn pump, altho' I'm not totally sure about
that. The Charlynn pump is not an IH factory installation, but should work well.

I've seen two tyrpes of Charlyn pumps, early
ones being contained in a box like reservoir,
the later ones being enclosed in a round can
like affair. I believe the early ones had a single control valve, the later ones have two
valves - one single acting, the other double acting. I'm going through a '34 F-20 that has
a '39 motor in it. I've added cast wheels and
just happen to have a round Charlyn pump that I had planned on mounting to the right of the PTO
and driven with chain. Thanks for the idea confirmation. D
