Glenn if you had been running it and it seized, let it cool down. Fill the case back up in oil. Then shoot some oil in the cylinder and try to turn the blade by hand with the spark plug out.

Glenn I think there was a misunderstanding. What I was trying to say was take it apart, clean up the crank, throw the old rod away and install a new rod. Been there and did that twice. Not on the same engine. I'm a slow learner. Was lucky both times. On the 5 hp Techumseh rod broke but no other harm. It was in snowblower with old oil working hard on mild day. On 16 hp Techumseh in 1816 B Case skid steer just ran out of oil. Like yours engine got too tight to run or start again but didn't quite seize. Both ran fine with a little polishing of crank and a new rod. That plus a gasket or so is far cheaper than a new engine if the rest of the machine is good.

There is no quick fix. About all of these small air cooled engines use a steel crankshaft and aluminum rod. With a lack of oil the rod metal transfers to the crank surface resulting in two rough surfaces. You were lucky. Usually it results in a seizure and the rod snapping off. Worst case is the end of the rod on the crank then goes through the block. Take it apart remove the rod and polish the transferred metal off the crank with fine grit emery cloth or the like. Replace the rod lubricating the rod and crank before assembly. Put her together and shes like new and a lesson has been learned.

Thanks. I tried that, but the pull cord still would not move at all and the blade moves but not very easily.

Glenn you did not state I don't think. Was this engine running and then seized up?

I looked at the bottom half of a torn down Tecumseh 4 horsepower engine. It is aluminun and there is no sleeve nor bearing for the crankshaft to turn in. If you seized up, the upper and lower machined assemblies where the crank turns might be warped.

I don't know about that but you might have to open it up and look and go from there.

Asking again. Was the engine running and seized?

Yes it was runing and it stoped, went to restart it and the pull cord would not pull and the blade would not move.

Definitely not a good sign Glenn. Sounds like dissasembly to see if the crank is seizing on the upper end, the lower end or both. If you decide to go with a reaplacement, Northern Hydraulics carries a large line of one lungers.
