I would like to convert a two way hydraulic cylinder to a 1 way so I can use it to lift a sickle mower on my H. (power up, gravity down) I'm assuming that I need some sort of a relief valve to screw into the one port of the cylinder so it doesn't trap air or create a suction?
Thanks. Dave

The others are right. All you need is a cheap plug. But I didn't think an H was worth spending a Buck on. HA HA

Dave, If you want the system to stay real clean and you have the hydraulic hose you can plumb the unused port back to the resevoir for the hydraulics system. Just remember to go in high above the fluid level. On some tractors it is easy to go back in at the fill plug. If the fill plug has a vent hole you will need to install a tee and retain the plug with vent.

I used to have just a vent on my 2-way cylinder on my Super H aftermarket 3-point hitch. I since have piped it like this guy said with a hose back to a tee screwed to the filler pipe. Then I kept the filler cap with it's vent. The problem I have had with 2-way cylinders is that they sometimes leak internally if there is no pressure on them. Then when I extended the cylinder all the way it would have a small amount of oil in the outlet side that would spray all over the tractor and me (discusting)out the vent. After adding the return hose the system works much better. Roger

All you need is a breather plug for the one hole. This will keep dirt and dust out. It has a screen in it with a small hole for air to get through. Any place that sells cylinders should have one in stock. It should cost under a dollar.

You might try Northern tool if you don't have a hydraulics place nearby.

A plug is available at any store that sells hydraulic cylinders etc. Cost will be around a buck.

You are correct. One line will have to become a "vent". It needs some kind of filter over it so it does not suck in dust. I don't know if a filter is available readily or not. Haven't seen one.
