Most off the shelf at auto store Alternators are NEGATIVE GROUND although as noted it is possible to have one made for Positive so hook it up accordingly and for Neg ground (if that's what you have) the coils + receives voltage from the Ign switch while its - wires to the distributor. If it had an ammeter and it was originally POS ground but you switched over to NEG ground the ammeter leads need reversed or it will read bass ackwards lol

Old has it, BUT make sure the alternator is what you think. You can order special polarity alternators, and they WILL smoke if hooked up wrong.

Is it a generator or an alternator 12 volt system??? If an alternator you have about a 99% chance it is - ground and if you hook it up + you will let the smoke out the moment you hook up the battery. As for the coil you always hook the same side of the coil as your ground so if you do a - ground the - goes to the distributor
