Hello, I'm looking to buy a 46 Farmall M. It has an extra shift lever on the right hand side, above the brake pedal. The current owner says it's a Heisler Overdrive that overdrives gears 1-4 and reverse. It drives good and seems to be in good working order. My questions are, are these overdrives prone to any problems? If the overdrive goes out, can you still drive it in the original gears, what is it exactly, just an additional transmission gear? Thanks for any help.

Thanks to everyone for the info. It is an M&W, as the lever is on the right side of the case, and can be shifted on the fly with a little care. The tractor has a distributor driven pump, the belly pump drive shaft is disconnected, and is just being used for the reservior. This thing also has power steering, a wide front off a 400, Worksaver 3-point, 12 volt single wire to alternator system, and new 13.6 38 rear tires. With any luck I'll be driving it home over the Holiday, Brrrr.

It also makes the PTO turn faster.

Scott, One tidbit on the Heisler overdrive...if you use it for any extensive field operation I would recommend disconnecting the link that drives the lift-all pump. Using the overdrive tends to overspeed the hydraulic pump and blows out the seals. I learned this lesson when I was a kid on the farm. Dad always knew when I had been using the overdrive in the field as the hydraulic pump would fail. Couldn't cover that one up!//FB

We just had an M come in to the salvage yard with a Heisler 9 speed that has a disconnect for the belly pump. I have never saw one before. When I get time I'm going to pull the pump out and see how the disconnect works.

I have something similar to this on my MD and I wondered if this is the M&W overdrive or the Heisler overdrive. It WON'T shift on the fly, and I understand the M&W unit does. Mine has a shaft coming out of the right side of the transmission with an attached lever and a rod running up to the Lift-All bracket. Any ideas?

The easiest way to tell if the overdrive unit is a Heisler is the lever is on the left side of the case and for the M&W unit the lever is on the right side or has a cable to engage it.

Scott, if the overdrive is still good after fifty years, I'd say they aren't prone to too many problems. It depends what breaks down to determine if you could still use the original gears. Basically, the 9-speed is a different transmission countershaft than the original which Can be made to turn faster or the same speed of the original. You'll see when you decide to take the transmission cover off because of curiosity! have fun with it!!
