I am restoring a '46 H for a gentleman and am having trouble with a few things. First off, the tractor is set up for 6 Volt, however, it has an 8 Volt battery (specifications of owner). Tonight, I was finishing up on the wiring, or what he would let me do and noticed the coil was too hot to touch during trying to start. He has the kill wire going to the (+) terminal and the wire to the distributor to the (-) terminal on the coil.

As for the wiring, I didn't have any say on this although it wasn't the way I took it off (was 8 volt then as well). I have got a scematic telling me where things go which is also the way I took things off (us college kids take great notes), but here is what is hooked up. *Generator A* to Voltage Regulator *Gen* terminal. *Gen F* to *VR F* terminal. *VR L* terminal doesn't have a wire going to it at all. *VR Bat* terminal to ammeter. However, my diagram says that the wire that is currently tied back goes from the *Generator F* to the light switch.

Are all the wires done correctly or am I working with a few guys who really don't know what they are doing? I have tried to do things the right way, but its one of those things "there's the right way, the wrong way, and my way; and you sure as heck best not use the right or the wrong." I am frustrated with this already and am ready to tell the gentleman to find someone else to finish it if he won't let me do it right. Somebody please help. Thank

Just curios but is this "kill" switch your refering to the old magneto system switch with just one wire coming out of it.It could just be the way Im reading you.

It is a system with a Delco distributor, not the original IH style. This one is in the vertical position instead of being horizontal.

Aaron - Your description indicates the generator isn't wired right. Punch the link below - it'll take you to a wiring diagram for a setup with a 4-terminal regulator like you've got. Note: If you've got a 4 position "LHDB" light switch you're gonna wind up with an unused resistor terminal on the light switch when you're finished. This is because the original setup had a cutout relay only (no regulator). Voltage regulation was manually controlled by the light switch/resistor combination.

The hot coil problem however is puzzling. My experience has been 6 volt coils work fine and run cool without additional resistors on 8 volt systems. A couple of possibilities:

1 - The coil is defective (got an internal short). Does the tractor start/run with this coil?

2 - You simply left the ignition switch "on" for an extended period with the motor not running. This can overheat the coil - may also burn the points too.

Hope this helps...

Bob M

PS - ltf is right - if the tractor is positive grounded, the + on the coil should go to the distributor and the - to the ign switch, as shown on my diagram.

Bob M, Have you got an electrical schematic for a farmall h with magneto?

jdh - Depends on the year of your H. If it's earlier than '52, the link below should do it. (Thanks got Farmer Bob for sharing his diagram.) It's for an A/B, but the H is wired the same. Not shown on the diagram is the mag and kill switch and wiring - you simply run a wire from the mag kill terminal to the kill switch.

If you H is newer, or has been fitted with a 4-terminal regulator, post back and I'll see what I can do for you.

Provided the battery is positioned with the + terminal grounded, the coil is wired in reverse. The coil primary is the - terminal and should have a hot wire coming from the start switch to it.The wire to the distributor goes to the + terminal on the coil. With the eight volt battery, a resistor needs to be installed in the wire going to the - terminal on the coil to drop the voltage to 6 volts. These two changes should lower the heat in the coil.

Paul. This sounds like a job for Bob M!

If you get a reply from Bob M, whatever he tells you take it the gospel cause this man knows what he is doing. From 2,000 miles away and haveing never seen my 1950 C he described what was wrong with it and how to fix it to a tee.He is one of many very smart cats on this site and if it can be wired he can tell you how to do it. If you don't understand"like me" then he will draw it out for you. This kind of thing is right up his alley. You might give a look in the archives on this site. Bob has written a lot on the electrical systems of these old machines.Hope this helps in some way.He has lots on the 6 to 12 volt conversion also.

Gee Paul, you're giving me a swelled head here (which incidentally I've already got on account of a #@!*&$% early winter cold....)

Anyway thanks for the kind words, and have a great Thanksgiving holiday!
