I recently found out that an aftermarket supplier made a four-wheel drive unit for older farmalls, H, M, and possibly others. I believe the name of the company was Elwood Manufacturing.? Does anyone know more about these kits, and if you can find one. If there is one for sale I may be interested if the price is right.

They were located in Elwood IL. (Joliet area) Actually they were a small welding shop. I believe Dick Pettigrew was the primary Owner, Had the money, retired farmer if I remember correctly, Don Jones was the brains, retired Cat eng. They made axles to fit everything from M's to 560's, and were the OEM supplier during the late '80's on the 86 series. I have pictures of their axles and ALL their sales brochures & manuals. Last thing I heard was they closed up shop about 5-10 yrs ago. IH also offered the Am. Coleman axle during the X06 series. Elwood used a DANA axle, made their own driveshafts, mounting brakets and gearboxes, mostly from purchased components. I even sent them a pair of wheels & tires to make a H186 Hi-Clear 4WD. It had 16.9X38's on the frt and 18.8X38's on the back. The frt wheels were the dual wheels for a 1586. They played with the axle ratio and driven gear ratio in their gearbox to get it to work. Don't look for the tractor, they took the axle off, sent the tractor back to the Hinsdale proving grounds & returned the tires to me at FARMALL. They were one of the suppliers I dealt with supplying parts to FARMALL.

You mentioned you had brochures for the Elwood conversions... From what I have read here, most of these used the PTO or belt pulley as a drive point, and then a gearbox?? I assume. A tractor wrecker just south of the great lakes has a 2705 Massey with one of these conversions, and I was interested in buying it for my 2705.. but..it seems that a 'second' transmission on this tractor would be a pain in the butt..especially with a 24 speed powershift.. or did they drive this one in a different manner..

thanks..

Hi, Nathan,
Elwood indeed made the kits as Wardner said. They used an adapter in place of the belt pulley to drive the front axle which was from a "deuce and a half" Army truck. Pretty simple, really. I have a neighbor that has the axle and is looking for the rest of the parts to convert one of his M's.

They made conversions for IH 5288 as we test drove one, bought one with factory setup instead.
Dad used to have brocures from them but when I checked they are gone now, bummer. I do remember they could convert many difrent tractors.

They were made for Ms thru 660. Not made for Hs or decendants. I have one on a 660D but have no intention to sell. Contact my heirs after I die. I expect that I will be around for another 30 years.
For more info do a search on Elwood.
I would doubt that you will find a kit in a crate somewhere. If you want one, you will probably have to buy a complete tractor and it won't be cheap.

Hi Wardner, Sounds like I need to follow you around as you sure run into some interesting items. Please tell me how this 4wd add on kit works, and really interested on the drive of the front axle from what it's driven from and how?
