I am about to embark on my first painting experience. I have a 45 H with original paint. There is some rust, but the tractor has always be stored inside. My questions are: 1. should I sand blast before painting, or will this cause more harm than good? I have heard that it will warp the sheet metal. 2. how much should I plan on spending on a good gravity spray gun - or is this the way to go? 3. any other advice would be very much appreciated. I am going to get some videos and books, but talking to someone who has been there seems to work best. - Thanks

This one was done with a DeVilbis JGA-502 that I have had for about 30 years. It is a nice gun, but I don't think they are made any more. The paint is IH 2150 without hardener. I have painted 3 Cubs since using an inexpensive HVLP gun from Harbor Freight. Its only advantages are a little less overspray, and easier to clean... but the finish isn't quite as nice.

Practice on some implements first to get the feel of the gun and you will do just fine.

Painted my Dads 1950 C in the garage this summer when it was 104 outside. Used a 30 year old binks gun that was bought at a sale. I am not an expert by no means but I was surprise at how easy it was. The paint went on like glass.Spent a lot of time hand sanding and degreasing but it payed off. Had the rear rims sandblasted cause they where rough. You will get a lot of good advise but keep in mind it is your tractor so do it how you want and have fun with it. It was the most fun I have had with my clothes on. When your done you will enjoy just setting and looking at it.Be sure and wear a good mask how ever you do it. You can tell by my post that the fumes will make you stupid.

have it sandblasted ,i just sandblasted my friends 330 jd in about 1.5 hrs and he painted it it looks excellent .we both have automotive body shop experence,so i dont paint his tractors .if you are going to show the tractor it needs to be professional painted as it takes several years, and lots of mistakes to really lay the paint on slick.try the local body shop and see if the painter will spray the tractor on his off time he might come to your place and spray your tractor for some extra money.if you are going to spray it yourself wait until summer or spray it in a heated shop. alot EASIER to spray in hot weather if you are learning..

Have not painted mine, had a neighbor who does it professionally do mine. But would suggest scan the forum, lots of good posts on guns and methods - if it was me, I would lean to the oven cleaner and wire brush method with a steam cleaner. Also suggest pick up Antique Tractor Bible, a very good section with methods and ideas on this in there. Seems like sand blasting is good for parts you can take off that have no seals or openings, i.e. fenders and such. Good luck, Jim

Degreaser like Castrol Super Clean, Pressure washer, sander on thinks that are relatively flat, wire brush (power and by hand). Depends how particular you are on the paint job. I did mine with aerosol cans. Takes a lot, but cheaper than buying a paint spray rig. Use a red oxide primer first.

Jim, I've read that sandblasting an engine can be very harmfull to the engine. Due to the extreme air pressure, sand particles are likely to blow past any cavity seals and enter into the engine.
