Looked at this tractor yesterday and had a couple of questions.

The the rear tires (industrial type) are mounted with the wheels dish side out (wide spacing). I could not tell by looking if they can be reversed to a narrow tread setting without hitting the fenders. Does anyone know if this is possible?

The engine appears to be smoking some from burning oil. From other posts I read it appears that this engine does not have sleeves. What is the procedure for rebuilding? Do you bore it out or just hone the cylinders and put in new pistons and rings?

Thanks for the help.

Steve, I was crunched for time on my original reply, sorry. I`ve never opened up my engine, not even the valve cover! I`m not sure about the sleeves, but if you`r handy, maybe A hone and rings would get you by. I paid 2500$ for mine, gannon box, no loader, power steering, but all original including faded paint, and tatterd seat. This size tractor is real popular here`bouts, as the 8-9n`s bring that kind of money non-running. And as Ange says, they are 3 times the machine. Good luck with your desision. Yours will make 3 24`s that we know of. J.

Hey Steve, Spend the 20 bucks,(Binder Books) and track down a manual. Mine has quite a big section devoted to the wheel spacing. 14-9/24`s on my 1965. Rebuild kits for the carb are simple, and pretty cheap. The blue smoke might not bother you that much if you price the rebuild! Ange, did that stuck clutch cost you a grand? I`m scared, the cover has never been off my pto. J.

My 2424 rims are turned the right way, yours should fit just fine by turning them around. tires should be size 16.9x28. as far as your engine is concerned its called a wet sleeve and they should be roplaced when out of round exceeds 0.008and/or taper exceeds 0.005 according to the IT manual. You can get a manual from an IH dealer. good luck! ange

Thanks for the reply. Does 3800 sound reasonable for this tractor. Fairly new paint (red) over the old yellow. Shows 4700 hours on meter. Minor oil leaks on engine. Appears to be hydraulic. Starts good even though it does smoke some. Also appears to run very rich. Lots of black smoke when governor opens up. I wonder if the air cleaner might be clogged. Tires fair at best.

I also have a 2424 int. model. Had major probvlem with engine smoke, fowled plugs bad. Found that the choke had full travel, but after close inspection saw that the butterfly was partially closed. There is an adjustment on the carburator choke arm to correct it. Now starts good, runs good, and with no black smoke.
I do have a heat problem, suspect blown head gasket, gas engine diesels when trying to turn it off. any suggestions?

I paid 1500.00 for mine but I was the first one to look at it also. Git lucky Anyhow I have yet to see another one like it although most tractors of this type in good mech cond. bring 3500.00 to4500.00. Make sure the 2stage clutch works good or thats another 1000.00. sounds like she needs an overhaul though. Alot of 8Ns are bringing that price and this is 3 times the tractor. Hope this helps. good luck! ange
