Like the title says i stumbled across a WDR-9 on factory steel a couple of years ago and am finally getting around to messing with it. Im still in the very early stages (mainly soaking everything in wd40). The engine on this machine is locked up tighter than pull starting it could break loose. The muffler was covered the entire time it sat and i have since began introducing lubricant through the sparkplug holes with the gas/diesel lever pulled back towards the driver. Any other suggestions on breaking this engine loose or is it a lost cause. I am leary of removing the head due to the scarcity of head gaskets. Everything else is complete, it rolls, brakes, clutches, and steers as it should and i know it is factory steel because 5th gear is locked out. Thanks in advance for any advice.

It looks like a good place to start. I don't remember the status of the engine, but they a pricy to rebuild. I have quite a few used engine parts if you need some.

Took a few more pics, you can see the shape of the tractor, I have no desire to restore it, only to get it running and show as is. Before I dump any money into this tractor are they worth the trouble? It is complete but I'd rather not spend thousands on a tractor with no real worth.

R stands for Rice Special

Basically had sealed brakes, massive fenders and sheilding, hand clutch, flip up seat, larger steel wheels, and with the steel option big batwing looking arms around the back with mud scrapers set in between the rows of lugs on the rear wheels. And as far as i know due to there being little information on these that i can find the factory steel models came with road gear locked out.

Can someone tell me what the R means?? At first I thought it was some kind of an orchard thing, do to the fenders. I am assuming it makes it "rarer" huh?? Very cool..... ;)

Pull the cover over the clutch and you should be able to get some leverage on a robust part of the flywheel/pressure plate. You may at least see if the crank itself is loose.

The injector pump has its own oil reservoir. When you get it loose enough to turn make sure there is oil in there. It can seep out over time.

I 2nd the 50/50 atf-acetone mix.

Any water in the oil pan? 9 series diesel has a crank driven counterbalance shaft to reduce vibration. If it's been sitting in water it could potentially be gummed or rusted.

You will get it loose much sooner using a 50 - 50 mixture acetone and power steering oil. I have worked on many of these, they are almost always stuck in the #1 cylinder. Try turning the engine backwards, It works most times. Good luck

Not that I doubt you, but that is where my parts engine was stuck. That is also what worked to pop mine out. It was dry stuck and wasn't very bad.

Any tricks on getting the rear hubs off? Mine are super stuck. I built a puller and used lots of heat. I have heard to try and "sweat" beeswax into there. Know a good source of beeswax? :wink:
No, WRs are not as rare as Ws on steel wheels from what I have seen. The steel wheels must have had advantages in the mud so they used them longer. I'm guessing there was no such thing as a rice and cane tires back then.

I know where to get beeswax, however what you need is a 100 ton press, if you are lucky it will come if not it will break the wheel. I have tried beeswax on things stuck and had no luck.

I would pull the valve cover and make sure all the valves are free. Head gaskets aren't scarce (to my knowledge) just expensive.

Also are there any other things is should be wary of on these old diesels? I am very unfamiliar with them and any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated. Also are these injection pumps relatively trouble free? The entire time this tractor sat it was full of diesel and oil in every place it should have been, hopefully that was enough to prevent the pump as well as everything else internal from becoming completely ruined.

It might not be rusted stuck, might be spun bearings, do some investigating before you break something.
