This is just a warning to anyone who has tractors...I collect and rebuild tractors as a hobby and have for over 20 yrs. I'm also a Sgt w/ the Illinois State Police. Those two lines crossed a few yrs ago when I became involved in an investigation into numerous thefts in my area of tractor parts....good stuff... weights, grills, airbreather precleaners, fenders, manifolds, carbs, etc. I found that a guy in Sandoval, Il. was the culprit. (Sandoval is east of St. Louis on US Rt 50) Served a search warrant and took a TRAILER LOAD of stolen property from his garage. Locked him up on 7 felony counts of theft and he ended up pleading out to a misdemeanor. (yeah, his mother was "connected".) I recovered a lot of stolen stuff and got it back to the owners, but alot of stuff in there i suspected as stolen couldn't be returned as I had no idea where it came from. ANYWAY, today, I spoke to a man who recently had the rear seat assbly and a precleaner stolen off of a farmall H parked in his elderly mother's yard. He gave a description of a guy who had stopped by asking about the tractor a month or two before the theft occurred. Then, he saw what he thought was the guy's truck parked on a side road a ways from his house. Next thing you know, parts were gone. Ironically, he remembered that the guy was from Sandoval, and he matched the description of my former arrestee. It looks to me like he may be at it again.. can't prove it, yet, but IF you have someone come up to you wanting to buy something from you, take down a license plate, or at least ask some ?'s that would help track him down later...and then lock up your stuff! IF you answer an ad from someone in Sandoval wanting to sell you stuff, beware!... I won't give his name here, but if you need more information, feel free to contact me through this forum or through my district HQ. Thanks, Sgt K. Hulsey, ILLINOIS STATE POLICE, D-12 EFFINGHAM, PH 217 347 2711

I read all the mail here related to Sgt Hulsey weeks AFTER I met him personally responding to a for sale add. I enjoyed reading the credits that others have offered in reference to his service and character as an officer, and someone aware of where to look for the good .. these days. Being from out of state, when I started interactions dealing with Sgt. Hulsey, I had no knowledge he was an Illinois State Police Officer. While trying to guarantee that deal was a "deal", my payment was refused until I had the chance to pick the item up by a generously agreed upon date. In that time others close by also wanted the deal. Sgt. Hulsey kept his word 100% with me and gave me every hour before the dealine to get the item picked up, before offering it to others closer. And the product was exactly what he said it was, and at a fair price. In the moments I talked by phone and in person, I found him to be the kind of person anyone decent would be proud to know was out there representing what people should be like, both professionally and personally. Pondering that he is an obvious credit to society today, it comes to me again to think of the value a lot of us have had in the past being raised where the work was honest, and the people there wanted to know you, and help if you needed it. Ironically, if more people were like the Sgt. Hulsey that I met, we wouldn"t need him as much. .... But then, the farm might get a good one back. Seeing some of the other young recruits, courteous and proper, also made me think "It IS different, in the corn belt." ( Thank you!) ... Most Respectfully, Phil

Sgt Bull:Im a correctional ofcr at the Shelby Co Sheriffs Dept. Recently the CaseIH in Shelbyville had a tandem axle trailer stolen. Might possibly be connected. They have some info on video tape of the trucks involved. Just thought this might help. I try to collect tractors too. Thanks Bob

Sgt. Bull: Thanks for letting people know your are out there. Country life has changed a lot in the last 20 years. Locals don"t want you, to have a good dog to let you know when someone comes down the lane. Chicago don"t want you, to have a gun. So you will have go to Indiana, to borrow a gun to put down a sick cow.

Thanks, Led. I grew up on a grain and cattle (angus) farm in Marion Co. IL. I often wish I'd stayed on the farm instead of taking this job, but I really like a steady paycheck and medical insurance for my family... I've been shot at, cussed at, rammed w/ a car, kicked, punched, spit on, chewed out by incompetent supervisors, micromanaged, and completely disillusioned in the judicial system with its inequities...(read, "money = justice"), but I've found solace in restoring antique tractors. I've met the best people, who have common sense, decent morals, general respect for people and their property in this hobby. Anyone who tries to make it like any other aspect of some of this miserable humanity where greed is the driving power is fair game as far as I'm concerned. I'm probably a throwback to the past who often wishes that I could have been around in the 40's and 50's earning a wholesome living on the family farm, but that's okay with me. (Don't get me wrong, I LIKE the amenities of today... its just the values that are lacking), and driving my 1940 B w/ a #5 mower cutting a few acres of timothy for my wife's big dog she calls a horse is therapy. You're right. We are over-regulated, and getting more so every day. And there are just too damn many people here to boot. But, as long as we can keep the vermin out of this hobby, we'll have our own place to escape the rest of it.

Sgt. Bull I was born & raised (on a farm) a couple of counties south & east of you. 15 years + showing 1937 F 12 or attending old tractors shows. You couldn't meet a finer bunch of people. Never met a stranger at shows.
Work, been there, done that, have the 75th Anv.sweatshirt. Experienced some of same B S you have. Have another (money=type of enforcement) but I can tell that you have Intergity, some of the people you deal with have none. So read your patch every day because we need you out there. Watch out for big egos stick with your hobbies& (OUT LIVE THE BASTARDS)

I and most everyone who is involved with the tractor hobby are thankful that this guy and you have crossed paths. Tractors are a fun hobby and you meet an awfully lot of nice folks. You have done a great service to the hobby by exposing this thief. Most of these guys don't happen to be caught. Thanks for a job well done.
