I am in the car business. So many times a customer will come in let's say on a Tuesday and look at a car and say yes I want it, I will be back Saturday, we ask for a deposit to hold it and they refuse maybe saying my word is good enough. Then, a customer with cash in fist will come, let's say on Friday and buy the car. Customer A sometimes comes back on Sat. and raises cain 'cause we sold the car out from under them. 90% of the time Customer A never comes back!

More info please. Did money exchange hands? Did you actually say, "Yes, I will buy it" or was it just "I want to take a look at it." As a buyer, you have to take an aggresive approach. Not all sellers will wait on potential buyers. The person with money in hand has first consideration. The only exception is if you actually said "Yes, I will buy it, at such-and-such a price, and will pick it up at such-and-such a time." That, to me, is a verbal sale.

We need a few more particulars.

There are a few in this hobby that have no clue about what "their word" means in the way of credibilty and basic morals. They think it is all about them and just how much they can get. You make a deal over the phone, agree to be there as soon as you can, and if someone else comes by with a dollar more, they will sell it out from under you.
I don't care how many people come on and try to say what a "good man" they are, I can tell you they are a crook, have been, always will be.
If we could just find a way to starve them out. Any ideas?
Sometimes their excuse is, "I have had people say they were coming before and they did not show", but that is lame. If the tractor is what they say and the price is in line, they will have no problem selling it, no matter how many "no shows" come along.
A deal is a deal.

So you when you say "sold",you paid him for a tractor that he sold to someone else the next day? Or was he holding it for you? ~brad
