Yeh, He sold a friend of mine a tractor as a good running tractor but turns out the tractor smoked so bad we couldn't see outside the barn while it was running. we had to put an engine in it It also has a noise in the transmission that we have to fix next. Which the tractor had the noise in it when it was sold. Be carefull when dealing with John Sullivan he will tell you that something is good when its not!

Sounds like next time you should just buy a new tractor. Considering the problems you had, it was probably still pretty good for a 50 plus year old tractor. In fact considering this you may still of gotten a heck of a good deal. I do not know Mr Sullivan but can not believe he would of represented this tractor as anything other than an old tractor, and it may of still run pretty well considering. Anyway good luck with the tractor.

If the seller said it was a good running tractor and it smoked like Tom B said then it wasn't a good running tractor age has nothing to do with it.I have 70 year old tractors that run like new so that's not the issue

Thank you sir, for understanding that the issue is not the age of the tractor but that John Sullivan told my friend that it didn't smoke!
When we couldn't get it started he took Sullivan for his word that it ran good. After we got it home it took hours to get it started and then keep it running. after we replaced the plugs clean the carb and gas tank replace the points it would start but barely ran. we kept it run for an hour or more but it still smoked bad! so we decided to pull the head off and take a look inside the engine. when we removed the head and seen that there was a 1/8 gap between all the piston and sleeves pretty for sure that the engine was never going to stop smoking. Then when John Sullivan was called he said "Its a 50 year tractor what did you want" Well I guess maybe a tractor like he decribed as good running and didn't smoke? But thats not what we got! So I was determined to tell everyone about this experence even though my friend droped it. so take this warning or suffer like my friend did. Don't belive anything John Sullivan says....This will be my final entry Thank You for those who could understand this message. and thanks again to yesterdays tractors.

I have never had any dealings with John on parts or tractors. I do know him and his family from antique tractor pulling. Seems like a nice enough bunch to me. Did your friend not start the tractor and drive it before buying from John??? Smoked you guys out of the barn? Should have been plenty of smoke out the ex. pipe when loading it. After you get it home is not the time to be test driving. Do that before the money passes hands. Sometimes you need to swallow your pride and back away from that "great deal" because something just ain't right. Better to go home with an empty trailer, than haul something that's not what you imaged it was before seeing and driving it.

Thats what I am talking about. The day we picked it up it was raining and John Sullivan told us it ran good and didn't smoke after we ran a battery down trying to start it. So my friend took him for his word. Big Mistake! Should have seen it run
but like you he thought John was honest. But now we know different and I was trying to warn others so they won't take his word on anything. That all I have to say!

Apparently you haven't checked you parts or you paid to much for them. John Sullivan wants to say he is honest and you may think he is a "Honest guy to deal with" but you will find out like others have. He's not an Honest guy at all! Thanks yesterday's tractor for having this forum to expose crooks like John Sullivan.

I can't help you, I wanted to talk with one of you on the phone or in person to see if you could help me! I just don't think this is the place to do that. I think the below posts have answered all my questions. I have a idea as to who you are and where you are from and your real name. When I see you I will talk with you then! Sorry for any problems Mr. Sullivan.

.....it could be one person with AT LEAST 2 different "personalities" and an aversion to the truth, sending messages from the SAME COMPUTER. I'd say that's much more likely.

Like I said before, I know John when I see him, but have not done any dealing with him. I really don't understand a few things. What's raining got to do with the tractor smoking? When the battery wouldn't start it, why didn't you pull start it? If you guys never got it to run, how did you load it? When you guys did get it started, and it smoked like a tar kiln-why didn't you call John and see what was going on? Maybe haulling it in the rain filled up the breather cup with water and that pushed oil into the carb.-- which made it smoke so bad. Alot to this story doesn't add up. The computer number is strange too. This must have been one whale of a deal to buy a tractor you couldn't get started. Now did you guys load it??? And changing motors without some troubleshooting doesn't make sence to me. There are alot of things I would do before pulling the motor. The first of many would be to call John and go from there. Strange, very strange.
