Correct tappet setting on TO30?

Just replaced a worn out rocker arm set with a pretty good used set and am undecided on the tappet settings. Engine plate says both intake and exhaust cold to .011, I&T manual says .015. First set them at .015 and had lots of noise, went back and set to .012 and sounds pretty sweet. Anyone think that's going to be to tight? I would imagine to tight would hinder valve rotor action among other things. Thanks for your thoughts, Wes

Wes,
The service manual says I&E both at .013 hot (while running). The bigger concern with them being too tight is that they won't be seated on the head quite as much and won't be able to dissipate as much heat, especially the exhaust valves. It may not be as much of an issue with water cooled engines but I became a believer with my motorcycles and VW engines.

Steve I got my specs from the original H.Ferguson owners manual and shop manual. The I&T manuals are not as accurate in my opinion.

Ray,
I think we're looking at the same manuals (I'm not sure what an I&T manual is). I've got the Ferguson Dealer shop manual and the Ferguson operator manual and they both eventually get to .013 hot. Like you, I've usually just set them to .013 cold. Its curious to me that the manuals state different cold "starting points". Thanks for your message. What is an I&T manual anyway?

Steve

Steve an I&T manual is produced by Intertec Publ. out of Overland Park, KS. They write service books for a lot of tractors and probably other items. I would compare them to Peterson's Automotive manuals in the depth and scope they deal with mechanics. Thanks for your comments on the settings. As I said the engine plate says to set them cold to .011. I went middle of the road at .012. Seems to run fine and sure is a lot quieter. Wes

The owners manual states 0.013" cold for I&E. The shop manual states 0.015"cold I&E; throughly warm up then set to 0.13". I set mine cold to 0.013" cold and buttoned it up. I think 0.012" is fine. You'll know if the setting is too tight, it'll be hard to start.
