I posted earlier regarding a problem I was having with my TO-20 not running except for a few seconds. I took the fuel sediment bowl assembly off and checked the screens and did not see much problems there. I think my problem is in the carburator. My engine seems to be getting fuel into the carburator ok. Now when I start the engine it ran for about five minutes but then started sputtering and would only run if I have the choke pulled. I know absolutely nothing about how a Carb works. Should I take off the carb and take it and have it rebuilt? Would spraying some carb cleaner in the air intake help? Is there a problem with the way the carb is set, which might mean turning one of the screws?

Be certain you have a supply of gas to carb. before you take the carb apart. Shut gas off at tank . Remove pipe plug at bottom of carb. and let carb drain till empty. Now turn the gas on at tank and see how much of a stream of gas you have coming out the drain plug. You will have to visualize how big a stream can pass thru the gas line to carb. My guess is your problem is getting gas to the carb due to restriction in gas tank. I have had this happen once a year for many years. Finally took the tank off and got most of the gravel and little balls of rubber out. I have used compressed air to blow back to the tank to clear debris away. Gas shut off must be on for this. Do not use much pressue either. good luck.

Here's what I would do in that situation:

1. Disconnect the fuel line at the carburetter and open the petcock. Fuel should come from the fuel line in a steady stream. If not, tank is dirty or fuel line is clogged or petcock/sediment bowl assembly is stopped up.

2. If OK, remove the carb and disassemble. Spray cleaner into the various jets, make sure all ports are clear, make sure needles are clean. Reassemble.

3. If it still does not run, buy a carb rebuild kit (only about $25 or so) and replace the seats and seals, etc.

4. If it STILL does not run right, take the carb for a rebuild (professional).

That's how I do things out in eastern MO.

Good luck!
