Any possibility that my Fergie, SN 28439 (1950-51) never came with an oil filter? The photos in my operator's manual show an oil pan that looks different from my tractor's. My oil pan has is shallower and has no attachment area for a filter assembly. Is it possible that I would have to remove the entire oil pan just to change the filter only to find no filter there? Previous owner never put in an oil filter. Hate to open it up, find no filter, and then have resealing problems. Also, thoughts on type of oil for my model. Research on this site has plusses for both detergent and non-detergent oil as well as single weight and double weight oil. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

think maybe you've got either at TO30 pan on the engine or maybe a complete TO30 engine. Does it say z120 (To20) on the block or z129 (to30)?? I think the pans were nterchangeable but I'm not sure. Anyone else know ???

I'll check out the engine block number today. Where exactly would these numbers be found? Thanks.

Are you sure there isn't a large round plate in the center of your oil pan? You can not see the filter from the pan. There is a large bolt in the center that drops the filter cover plate from the pan. The filter should be inside the pan behind that plate. There is also a smaller plug off to the side of the round plate that will allow you to drain the oil.

Absolutely smooth surface--no round plate on underside of oil pan. Also oil drain plug is not on bottom, but low on the shoulder of the oil pan facing the tractor rear. What's up??

I bet that it is a TO-30 oil pan. The TO-20's would leak if you hit something just right from underneath. I remember when I was home on the farm our filter area got damaged and always leaked. I welded the filter cover on solid. It didn't seem to matter to me back then but I know now that it wasn't the best thing to do. If yours has a 30 pan it would also need the 30 oil pickup and screen. I have some correspondence from a fellow who modified a TO-20 internally and brought the lines outside to install a spin on filter on the outside.

Do I then need an oil filter assembly for a T0-30 oil pan or are there other complications with a mismatched engine block and oil pan? Thanks.

The TO-30 has the filter mounted on the right side at the rear of the engine block. The mounting boss for the oil filter is cast in the block, so there would be no place to mount the filter on the TO-20.
