In the old days they used thin, finely woven hemp twine to pack these unions. They usually held for twenty or thirty years without leaking.

I believe you may make things worse with the teflon tape Bill. This should have a flange fitting and by design, they seal themselves when tightened. Try again without tape, snug it up and see what happens.
Good luck,
Gary

I got really nervous over my fuel bowl. It was leaking from the packing of the shaft which opens and closes the valve in the body. I gave rebuilding it a try, it was original eqt. No joy! Just plain old worn. My TEa 20 is a tool not a collectors item. So... After two tractor shops I bought one from NAPA. $23.00 ish. The threaded fitting up into the tank was fine. My Grey menace had two different threadings on this bowl. I found a push lock fitting for the discharge, cut the very odd but original fitting off the copper tubing line to the carb. and used some high temp fuel line with two clamps on the tubing and voila! NO more leak no more worrying. Good luck!
