I want to replace the spindle bearings and I'm having trouble with the woodruff key. Is there any easy way to get them to break loose?

The method that I use to remove Woodruff keys with out damage to the key or key slot,is to use a flat point pin punch that has a diameter that is slightly less than the width of the key.Place the punch on the key near one end of the key and strike the punch with a hammer.By hitting the key near one end will cause the key rotate and the oppsite end of the key will come out of the key slot and as you continue striking the punch the key will rotate it's self out of the key slot until you can put the puch on the back side of the key to complete the removal of the key.This method works for me and I hope it works for you.Good Luck

Bowser;
Your method presumes that the spindle assembly is
already disassembled. How would you go about it
if the key was preventing disassembly? I tried
penetrating oil, heat, force- all to no avail. I
finally gave up- something I rarely do...

Do you have the spindle arm off so you can see the key? If not you won't be able to remove it till the arm comes off first. Take the bolt out of the arm spread the opening with a screwdriver tap the arm up and off the spindle then you can remove the key and push the spindle out of the Axle extention assembly. Mark H.

Mark, thanks for the reply. I was able to spread
the opening in the arms but unable to slide things
apart. I tried both right & left in the vise
and tried everything I could think of to separate
the assemblies. No luck. The keys are visible
from the top and I tried to free them with a flat
punch. While they appeared to move ever so
slightly, I could only move the spindle/arm about
1/8" and then it was a dead stop. I felt I was
close to breaking something if I persisted, so I quit.

You must remove the bolt from the arm there is a knotch in the spindle the the bolt goes in somewhat and will not come off if you don't. While the screwdriver is still in the crack that the bolt was pinching tight then you hit the arm up and it should come off, but you must keep it spread some to do. I have pulled about 12 this way and some are harder then others but all 12 came off. Mark H.

Mark;
I believe you've hit on the answer: remove the
bolt from the arm. I had only loosened the bolt,
not realizing there was a matching notch in the
spindle. Duh!
Much obliged.

The way I have taken them out is to use a cheap screwdriver and drive it under the edge and will start to come out. One end or the other has a little edge you can get it to grab and knock it loose. Mark H.
