Noticed the same thing happening today as last week. After about 1 hour of light bushogging in 1st gear, power (and rpms) gradually decreased even at full throttle. The engine did not stall, just seemed tired and wanted to rest a little!! Fluid levels were good (needed a little hydraulic); water temperature was about 170 degrees, oil pressure 35-40--so nothing jumped out at me as a problem. I remembered this happened last week when I was not using the PTO, just pulling some light brush in a cart. I'm puzzled. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Mine would do that and it ended up being the condensor in the distributor. I changed thed carb, coil. Cleaned the fuel line. I had tuned it up earlier so I didn't try the condensor. I added new distributor cap, wires and it still ran bad. I put a Lucas condensor from my MG and she started running fine.

My TO20 had a similar problem past summer. Ran well for a while, then got lazy. It did it a few times within a couple of weeks. Like you said, real mysterious symptoms, and nothing really jumps out at you. I did a complete tune-up; plugs, points, condenser, rotor, carb disassembly and cleaning, the whole works. The plugs were EXTREMELY worn, almost no electrode at all. This despite the previous owner's assurances that it had been tuned shortly before he sold it to me the previous summer. Anyway, this seemed to take care of it. Ran it all the rest of the summer with nary a shudder or chug. Don't know for sure if it was the tune-up, the carburetor cleaning, or a combination, but it was a relief. The way it was acting, I was thinking head gasket or something even more serious. Sometimes it's the simple stuff. Good luck.

Ray, Thanks for starting my detective work. I am pretty new to old tractors, mechanically inclined but not an engine mechanic, by any means. In other words I can service easy things but not repair. What am I looking for when I check the thermostat? I will clean out the fuel sediment tank, add dry gas, maybe even change the spark plugs and see if the engine stays peppier longer. I will also check with the previous owner and see how long it has been since the the radiator was flushed. I remember reading mixed comments on such with an old tractor--so I will check out this site to on that. Thanks for your help to date.

The thermostat may be checked by placing in a pan of water and heated slowly to 200deg with a candy thermometer suspended in the pan. The stat will begin to open at the embossed pressure ie: 160deg,180deg, etc. if working properly. If it opens below or above the indicated temperature, the stat must be replaced. Some guys operate their tractor without a stat, but this is not good for the engine. The first thing you must do is convince your wife to allow you to use her candy thermometer!!!

Two things come to mind. First, the radiator and engine cooling. Insure that the radiator fins are clean and you can see through them. Remove the top radiatior hose and check the thermostat. Check the pump for proper operation and belt tension. Have you flushed the entire cooling system? Second, the fuel system. Check for adequate fuel flow at the carb., and clean the sediment bowl. Drain the carb. bowl using the screw provided to remove rust, dirt, water, etc. from it-DO NOT BLOW COMPRESSED AIR INTO THE FUEL INLET- to clean the screen there. Add a container of fuel system cleaner/water remover to the gas tank and fill with new, clean fuel.BTW, the factory oil pressure relief valve is set for 30psi max. That's my brainstorm for tonight. Good Luck!
