Distributor problems

Earlier this spring, my distributor on a 1951 TO20 flew apart as the advance mechanism and the plate that holds it were crumpled and the distributor jumped out of the bracket and jumped timing. I got another at the junk yard and replaced the damaged parts and the tractor ran fine for the last month. Saturday, it happened again. What could be causing this? The advance weights and the metal plate were crumpled and the distributor jumped up and broke the bracket that was holding it to the frame. Should I rebuild again or should I just buy a new distributor? Does anyone have a clue as to what is going on?

I had the same type of problem on my TO I went ahead and replaced the entire dist. but before I did so I replaced the spacer washers to reduce the end play that the dist. had. So far I havent had any problems.

Since no one helped me with my distributor problem, I think I found the answer on my own. The cam with the bull gear seems to have too much play back and forth that is causing excessive vibration in the distributor. My new question. How hard is it to replace the thrust plate or Thrust bearing on the cam? Is this a job a novice mechanic can handle, or is it a job for a "pro". How much would something like that costs? Anyone have experience with something like this?
