I rebuilt the engine (and about everything else) in my 20 and since then, judging by the plugs, it is running lean no matter what I try. It has a new sediment bowl and valve assembly, all new line from there to the carb and I have been through the carb twice.
FYI: The engine has all new valves and new cam, pistons and sleeves and all the usual rebuild stuff. There are only three things different than stock.
1. I used the oversized pistons (available from most suppliers) and sleeves to increase the displacement.

2. Gapless piston rings from Total Seal.

3. Electronic ignition from Genesee Products.

I'm running AC 65 plugs and when I pull them after mowing the porcelin is bright white.
The engine temp under load remains in the 170 to 180 range.
Any ideas?

The recomended spark plugs for the TEA are Champion L10's they have an equivilant now called something else, also made by Champion.

Neal, it sounds like you are having lots of fun with your Fergie friend. I had a VW that had a very rough idle -- intake manifold nuts had jiggled loose and it was sucking air. You might check the carb-to-manifold gasket and the torque on the intake manifold nuts. Godd luck! Tex

Thanks Tex. I will check both.
What really has me baffled is that the engine runs fine and seems to have lots of power. If I wasn't worried about frying a piston or the like I wouldn't be at all worried.
What are you running for plugs in your engine?
If your suggestion doesn't work I think I will start drilling out the main jet and the seat for the float needle. Hate to do it but I'm about out of ideas.
