My TEA has a miss. Simple. And yet so hard to find out why!!! I have rebuilt the carb, and checked all the ht leads, the distributor looks ok, so whats the problem? How would I check for bad spark plugs, and how could carbon cause the miss, which is constant, so it sounds like its on 1 or 2 cylinders?

Hi Newguy,
Well, first of all, I would just change the plugs, points, condesnser and distributor cap. They're probably long overdue. If that doesn't fix it, take a pair of INSULATED pliers, and while the engine's at idle, remove the plug wires one at a time. If there is no change in the stutter, you have found the bad one. At this point, I would move the wire to another cylinder and see if the trouble follows the wire. Of course, it wouldn't hurt to replace all the wires anyway.
One other thing that is often overlooked is the resistor back towards the firewall. My TO30 was giving an erratic miss and driving me crazy. The resistor was cracked and was sometimes good and sometimes bad.

Hi Chuck!
Is this resistor the starter switch, or something in the distributor, or something that is only on the TO30, not the TEA20. Mine has the original safety starter, new plugs (faulty?), condenser, and ignition coil.

TEAs didn't have that resistor, at least not originally. If yours has serial number above 200,000 it was 12v to start with. If the serial number is lower tahn that and the tractor is 12v, someone has converted it, in which case the resistor could be there.
Have you tried checking the plug wire order? Sequence is 1342, but if you think the rotor goes the other way than it really does, you'll end up with 1432, if you know what I mean.
Condensor is another likely suspect. Even new ones can be bad right out of the box.
I would go from cheapest to most expensive - plug wire can be bought by the foot, so start with that. If you have the original cap and coil there are little brass washers with slits in them that make the connection between the terminal and the wire - don't lose those things!
Distributor caps are very expensive, so wait on that till you've checked the other stuff.

It's commonly called a ballast resistor and it's a piece of white ceramic with a wire going from one end to the other.. It's about 3 to 4 inches long and on mine, it's located behind the engine approximately under the battery. It's used to maintain correct voltage to the coil. However, mine was converted to 12 volts by the previous owner and it keeps 6 volts going to the coil.
Good Luck
