I wrote earlier of the problems having with ditributors flying apart. I have replaced the distributor with a brand new one after teh previous two came apart with the advance weights coming out and tearing up the metal plate that holds it in place. I bought a new replacement distributor from local parts dealer, and noticed a strong vibration still in the distributor. My brother who is a mechanic thought I had too much play in the cam and recommended new thrust plate.
I took my tractor to a dealer for repair, and he is telling me the new distibutor is coming apart also, and he doesn't think the cam has excessive play, and doesn't know why it is vibrating and tearing up the inside of the distibutor. He thinks it might be something electrical as the advance mechanism is tied to the electrical components and causing too much play in the advance weights, causing them to hit the housing of the distributor and causing wear and finally distruction. HELP...has anyone out there ever heard of this problem and what needs done to correct???/ I am getting desparate!!!!!

Thanks to all who tried to help. I wanted to update to let you know what I have been through on this tractor. I had the motor tore down to see what was the problem with the Cam shaft and distributor. The cam had wallered out the keyway on the cam timing gear which caused a lot of "slop" in allowing the cam to travel. I replaced the cam and timing gear. The governor was only half there so I had to have it rebuilt. I had to have my third new distributor as the one I placed on the tractor so I could load it on my trailer tore it up. Around $1,000 later, I hope to have my problems solved for now.....

As a follow up, the mechanic I am working with says I have a dropped valve on one of the cylinders, I am not sure if it is related to the distibutor problem or not. Anyone care to guess if that is part of the problem, I have him now checking the cam gear. He thinks I might have a broken cam, but I don't see how it could be broken if the engine runs ok. Any advice is totally appreciated on what to do next. Should I be looking at tearing down the entire engine and totally rebuilding? Should I get out my rifle and put it out of its misery?

OOPS Just seen your post stating that you have
a TO tractor probably with a Continental engine.

In the Standard engine on my TEA the disributor
shaft is driven by a gear on the camshaft and
there is an extention shaft under the distributor
shaft that drives the oil pump.

Unfortunately i don't remember the distributor
arrangement for Continental engines.

HTH ?

I would have to suspect thrust plate. If that checks ok just a wild guess cam bearings, but I dont know if this engine has cam bearings. Where are you located?

I am in Kentucky in USA. I am not sure either if cam has bearings. The mechanic is looking at the cam gear and other workings after he gets inside the governor housing.

PJ-I've been reading your posts and can't say for sure what's the matter with your distributor. I do know that electrical components don't cause vibration. I'd check the cam gear and dog gear. Are you replacing the entire distributor and shaft with drive gear? If you are, you may have a bent cam or scarred gear teeth. If not your drive shaft is likely bent. The drive gears are helical. They'll throw your distributor out if the angle is off, there's binding in the shaft bushings, or myriad other reasons.

The distrutor was brand new out of the box, and included the drive shaft and end gear, the gear on the cam looked fine to mine and my mechanic's eyes. Is it possible the shaft on a new distributor is bad? What about the other two older distibutors??/ the gear seemed to line up ok with the existing cam shaft gear and looked identical to the ones I took off on the old distributors. What should I do to fix this mess?????

I just repaired a TO-35 that had this same problem recently. If the distributor jumps up and down as you gun the motor and let off on it---you better check the nut on the end of the camshaft....this one was broken and lying in the timing cover. Other than that...there was a situation where the type of governor was changed and a spacer had to be put on to compensate for the new one. (around 1/16" if I remember correctly) With the helical gears on the camshaft and the distributor...any movement of the camshaft backwards or forwards will shove the distributor shaft upward or pull it downwards. Big Dean clued me in, he had been a Massey mechanic for 27 years... If you find out this is what's wrong with yours, hunt him up and thank him....he's around here somewhere.....Fred Martin, Greenfield, Ohio
