can any one direct me to the 12 volt conversion of a to-30. Mine has been converted but shortly after running tractor the battery begins to boil, very dangerous situation. I think the wiring to the alternator is somehow mis wired. Please tell me what wires go were and I will be fine, please help me so that I will be able to use the tractor this weekend. I have seen diagrams but do not savvy. thanks before hand for all you help. Kirby

Kirby,
Sent you a long e-mail with wiring directions. I agree with Jim W., Regulator is most probable culprit.

I too have a bit of a problem. I own a '58 FE35 with a partial conversion. It has an alternator and a messy bunch of wires but it doesn't charge at all. You sent Kirby a wiring diagram for his TO-30, Would this diagram also apply to my FE-35? Thanks for any help offered.

Peter,
Sorry, but I don't know anything about the wiring on a FE35. If it was 6V and was changed to 12V, the wiring diagram should do ok. This will not cover any accessories, changes in wiring for diesel engines or use of a magneto. Get a good manual and compare the wiring you have to the diagrams in the manual and the 12 V conversion diagram and you'll probably see the problem easily. If that doesn't work, post a help message on the discussion board and explain your problem. These guys have centuries of experience, all totaled and will be glad to help!

Thanks, I'll do that, and probably post details later.

That would be a regulator problem, most likely. An alternator can source a fairly high voltage and the regulator is supposed to supply only the amount that's correct for the battery.
Some alternators have the regulators built in, and some use external ones. If there is only one wire coming out the back of the alternator, it has an internal regulator.
I suppose it's possible your alternator should be externally regulated, but someone has taken its output directly to the battery instead.
One thing you could try is to measure the output voltage of the alternator, and compare that to the voltage at the battery. If the alternator has more than one wire coming out the back, measure the voltage between the terminal with the heavier wire on it and ground (with the tractor running). The voltage should go up as you increase the rpm. If the voltage is the same on your battery, then the regualtor either needs replacement or has been bypassed.
Hope this makes sense.
Jim

Sorry but I can't help you. My tractor began doing this and I took it to a guy named Gary O'Neil. He lives near Emporia and I think he might be able to help you
