I have a Ferguson 30 that has been converted to a 12v. I use the tractor primarily to mow. Woods finishing mower. I cannot get the tractor to start. It has a relatively new battery that holds a charge. The starter turns very strong but I am not getting any spark. The last time I used it I noticed it ran a little sluggish and lost power in the thick stuff. It never used to do this. I parked the tractor and have not gotten it to start since. I had some trouble with a new ignition switch I installed. I would have to play with it a little to get it to start. Once it tried to start it fired right up and ran like a top. the guy I bought the tractor from had replaced virtually everything so most is pretty new. Any suggestions would be helpful. I'm pretty much a novice so keep it simple. I'm replacing the coil, condenser and points tonight. I'll see what happens after that.

I think your switch would more likely cause an abrupt failure than running rough. My first guess would be the condenser, closely followed by the points. Sometimes the part of the points that rubs against the cam wears down, to the point where the points barely open at all.
If you will replace those things one at a time you'll be able to tell which one was causing the fault.

PS Recently I had a total failure and it turned out it was because I turned on the lights. The wire running to the rear light went through a metal clip, and the insulation had worn down so the wire was shorting to the clip which grounded the whole electrical system. Tough one to spot.

I agree with Jim. You must approach this systematiclly, start at the battery and check for voltage at each connection and/or switch to the coil. Don't forget the point-to-coil wire where it passes through the distributor housing, I've had the wire insulation wear through and short out killing the ignition. Once you are certain you have reliable voltage in the low voltage ignition system you then check the high voltage system-coil,dist. cap, rotor button, plug wires, spark plugs etc. An often overlooked item is the ground system. The battery ground cable is attached to the dash metal and it has good potential to lose continuity from rust, paint, dirt etc. Reroute the ground directly to a starter mounting bolt for troubleshooting purposes. I suspect you'll find a faulty ignition switch though, as Jim says.
