Coil/resistor question

Yesterday, on "As The Fergie Turns", things had deteriorated to the point where the TO-20 wouldn't start for Mr. MaGoo. Industrious(but lazy) fellow that our hero(?) is, he got his faithful sidekick "testlight" out, and turned on the ignition switch, and varified that there was power to the resistor, coil and distributor..... he then checked the coil for spark.....and bingo! no spark.....lets join "sparkless in KY." now....as our story continues:

O-K guys....I need a coil- Question: The tractor's been converted to 12V. Naturally, I get a 12V coil- right? BUT: Do I need to use the resistor (mounted on coil bracket) or can I run a 12V coil directly off of battery current? (Methinks directly would be O-K.....but I'll see what jou guys think!)

Coil should be marked if it has a built in resistor. The (-) side of coil should have 6to8 volts on it with points open. If you run 12 volts through the points they will burn prematurely and possibly cause erratic firing of coil (misfires), due to arcing of the contacts. Hope this helps, good luck. Let us know how you make out.

Thanks, guys!

I searched the archives last night, and found info that pretty well matches what you said- I ended up buying a 12V coil with 3 Ohms of resisternce built in (NAPA part# IC14) and used that without the external resistor..... ...fired up old Fergie, and it runs better now....the best it's run since I've had it! Was able to do some bushoggin'! Now.....I'll just take a look-see under the valve cover and adjust the valves..... and install the proper rebuilt carb....and she should be purrin' like a kitty and have the power of a raped ape(hopefully)

Tom, I converted my tractor to 12 volts and used a NAPA 13-4011-SW alternator with the 12 volt NAPA IC 14 coil. I haven't had any trouble so far. The alternator charging is intermittent. I worry about that. My volt gauge shows 14 + when it is charging and about 12 volts when it drops off. It may go 15 or 20 minutes without charging and then all of a sudden start. I haven't run the tractor very much but hope for both of us that the coil don't burn the points. The coil did show 3.2 resistance between the + and -. before I put it on. This was the recommended resistance that I read somewhere on the board for the 12V conversion. Let me know if you have problems with the coil Bill H.

Bill: I doubt that the IC14 coil will burn the points, considering its' resistence. Considering its' price though.....I wonder if we shouldn't've stuck with a cheaper coil and the external resistor? Oh well....at least we have a good hot spark, and I can tell the diff in the way my tractor runs! I think the problem with your inmtermittent-charging alternator might be the internal regulator- is it keeping your battery fully charged? If not, I might consider looking for an alt that has a different regulator. Thanks for the input!

Rich

Rich, so far the alternator is charging the battery enough to start the tractor. The alternator has a 3 yr. warranty. I spoke with the NAPA Store owner and he has agree to swap it out. Some on this board recommeded the 10 SI #7127. The 10 SI is a 3 wire and if I change the 13-4011-SW out I'll probably get it. For now I'll continue using it until the first time the tractor fails to start. Bill H.

Funny that we got onto this subject- I got my tractor running good enough today to do some bushoggin', and after almost 4 hours of running, my battery wasn't charged up. Got a cheap Mexican Wal-Mart battery, that's already been exchanged twice (came with the Fergie)..... now I'm gonna take ye olde alternator down to Auto Zone and get it tested.....I hope it's a 10SI (it is a 3 wire). I'd hate to think that the WalMart battery cant even last for two weeks? I know they suck....especially for tractors...but COME ON! At least my tractor performed very good today.....and when I do the few other things to it that I have to do, it'll be a champ. Just out of curiosity, Bill- any idea where your alternator bracket came from?

Rich, I got a lot of help with the conversion from this board. John, In. emailed a picture of his alternator bracket and also a wiring diagram. I use both. I took my generator off which has its own mounting bracket. I took John's picture and my generator down to my brother's shop. He farmed for forty years and is retired and bored to death. He has all kinds of stuff (Welders, metal cutting, and grinders left over from the farming days. He took John's picture and my generator using its mounting hole deminsions and metal thickness and made the bracket with scrap metal and 2 junkyard chevy alternator brackets. I brought it home and only had to hacksaw off about 1/2 an inch below the bottom hole. The clearance there is very close. I only added 2 flat washers to bush the belt alignment. I told him if I could find enough Fergie owner converting to 12 volt I could put him in business. He would have none of that. Well that my story and I hope I didn't give to much publicity to John, In. but he was really helpful. Bill H.

Hey Bill!

Wow....Your brothers' shop sounds like a paradise!
I had some jury-rigged bracket on my TO when I got it- but it didn't permit you to tighten the belt enough to take out all the slack, nor would it permit you to use a shorter belt! An aquaitence had a bracket, that, after being modified and combined with my bracket, did the trick- but it has a big piece chunked out of it, in order to let the governor linkage clear it. But it works- But....knowing me...after I get the tractor all spruced up, it'll bug me. You'd really think there'd be a source out there somewhere for decent brackets. I got my new alternator today- old one was indeed bad- and it was some oddball old Chevy alt- so I got me a nice 10SI. The tractor is shaping up.

I converted my 30 to 12V. I used a dropping resistor and used all the old ignition parts. Check for 12v or 6v at the coil. These dropping resistors sometimes open, then you'll have no voltage at the coil.
