Changed oil in tranny, pump, rear end. Had brass filing in the oil. Last year I changed oil and put in a 1 3/8" pto. At that time I cleaned out the tranny, pump section, and differential, which all had gobs of black goop in them. I guess my mistake was putting in oil from Fleet-Farm, The oil I used was listed as suitable for M-F tractors. Only had about 5-6 hours use before I put in M-F 1103. Question is, did I screw up the pump? Every thing seems to work okay, the 6` flail mower stays in the up position substanually longer now.

We found brass dust in the oil while working on the pump. A previous owner had failed to properly attach the PTO assembly to the back of the transmission. We assumed the brass dust was caused by the previous poor assembly. In the process of correcting the problem, I examined the PTO shaft where it passed through the brass bushing and found it was very crudely machined. Before reassembling it, we spent considerable time polishing it. We haven't had an opportunity to check the oil again.

Ther is a bushing in the back of the pump that can be observed by pulling the PTO shaft and looking up the hole. You will see where the PTO goes thru this bushing as it enters the pump. Every once in awhile these bushing break. I don't know why. Bushing is the same a 9N or 2N Ford .

Dick, the only bronze pieces are the cam blocks and cam bushing. The cam is not interchangeaable between -20 and -30 pumps as it is slightly longer in the -30 but since you did nottouch the pump, only the oil. Did you have bronze or brass looking filings in original oil change ? I can't imagine you would get filings from wear from the wrng oil as it sounds like an incorrect fit, but since you didn't change anything that is a mystery. What type of oil was put in from Fleet-Farm? I would worry more about the gears in the rear drive and xmission than the pump if the oil was for hydraulics only.

Phil, On the first oil change I did not notice any brass dust. The tranny and pump had lots of water in them, plus all of the black goo. Had tranny cover and pump cover off, pto out, and washed every thing out with a vegetable sprayer filled with kerosene. Filled everything with Fleet-Farms universal transhydraulic fluid. Lable says Same as Permatran-Permatran III. No dust in tranny, or rear end.
