Hello,

Can someone let me know what type of oil to use in the rear-end of my TO-30. Also, was having trouble locating where to fill the rear-end. I pulled the dipstick on the side of the foot plate and it was bone dry. Any information is appreciated.

Thanks
Ryan

If you need an operators manual you can find a PDF on line if you float around looking for it. I printed one about a month ago. It's like 72-74 pages. I hole punched the pages and put it in a 1 inch ring binder. The service manual and parts book I did have to buy.

get yourself a manual for the tractor and follow its instructions. pretty sure this site sells them.

much easier than getting half a dozen opinions here.

I remove the lower bolt to the plate that holds the dipstick and fill to where it comes out of the bolt hole . This keeps a lot of oil out the axle housing and keeps plenty of oil available to the pump.If you decide to go with this, after you service your oil to that level, make a mark on the dipstick for future reference. Since I have started doing this on my 30, I don't have the leaks around the axle housing near the brakes. Good luck.

The correct oil is GL-1 hydraulic/transmission oil. This is mineral oil based and has been around for a while. A lot of us have switched to motor oil which does not attract moisture like mineral oil does and causes ice in the hydraulics during the winter months. I am using 10w-30 in my To30, I am sure others will chime in on other choices. ********************
I refilled my TO35 with GL-1 90 weight mineral oil per the manual.
but as the tractor hydraulic pumps get older and a bit more worn, GL-1 is harder to pump in the winter months, Lift still works, but I have to wait a minute for the lift to work, motor needs to warm up anyway, so its not a problem.

if 10w30 oil works, then go for that, would be much easier on the old pump in the winter months.

in the summer months the lift jumps right up as it should.

Ps. The oil fill is the big cap near the shifter lever. This fill the transmission and the hydraulic area. About 6 1/2 gals. I use a siphon hose and 5 gal bucket on the seat and it fills at a good rate as to not ever fill the transmission too quickly.
