Good Morning
I am as new at this tractor stuff as anyone. I would like to know how hard it is to change the fluid that run the hydrualics, I was looking at it last night and its under the seat of my 52 TEA-20 I removed the old Ferguson loader and noticed that all the fluid is a milky/rust colour. The dipstick doesnt show any fluid on it. How much fluid do I put back in? How many drain plugs are there and where are they located? Is there a filter or a screen that needs to be taken off? Sorry for all the questions but Id like to give my little fergie a well deserved fluid change. I figured out the engine oil and filter replacement already, and now Id like to try the hydrualics or transmission system as well. Any help would be great
Thanks Barry

Hi, Barry. Here in Sarnia, Ont. I saw that the Canadian Tire store carries a GL1 80-90 wt mineral oil. I think that would be suitable.

Barry, It takes 6 gallons of 80/90w MINERAL oil. Mineral oil is NOT gear oil. It can be purchased for about $6.00 per gallon (US) in bulk. Bring your own container. Oil supply/tractor supply shops will have it. TEA's are very common in Canada. Lotta discussion but that IS what you use.
The machine loved it for the first 50 years and I can Guarantee it will love it for the next 50!
Good luck,
JOe

Mineral oil is same as GL-1, not same as GL-5. In the stores it may not say "mineral oil".

Not a big job , just get underneath and remove drain plug for trans , it all should come out same hole . If oil is real milky , a trans flush is in order , if not , let it sit a while after draining , a hot day is best . No tranny filter , use MF HY-Trans , your dealer has it . --- Bill

Berry if you search through the postings you will find many insites to your questions as this is an often asked question.

Basic nut shell: a) get a manual either here or an I&T manual (FE-2) at a local TSC store. It answers all your questions except actually how to do it.

Yes it is ease/ no screen/ filter

b) The system is one reserve for the trans. and hydrolics. There are three plugs under the tractor midway and aft. Fill plug is near gear shift.

Drain all three areas (Exp. point: drain small plugs first to lessen the gush out of the main plug)

c) The system takes 6 gallons of 90 wt gear oil. There are lots of discussions on type etc. From what I know use a GL-1 rated. Avoid ATF and multi weight gear lube. I used the Ford N searies formulated lube.... Maybe others can comment.

d) find out more about flushing the system. I did not do this and was disapointed to find that the new oil was contaminated with the older oil left in the system. I also had to drain about 2 gallons of oil back out of the system because it was over filled due to not getting all the oil out.

Good luck.

The 3 drain plugs will empty the system of fluid but leave the settlings so a flush is in order. The loader hoses and cylinders should be drained also. I'd use a light mineral oil to flush the tractor system and absorb remaining water in the system. MF 1103 oil is the new number for the original 80/90 Wt straight mineral oil specified in the owners manual. For continued cold weather use(<32F) 40Wt may be substiuted, BUT you must return to the original specifications for warm weather use to prevent damage to the hyd system. As Jeff said, buy an owners manual from a MF dealership. It's the best money you'll spend.

Hi Barry,
If you ordered an FE2 I&T be forewarned it does not cover the engine in the TEA!. Luckily for me it came with my tractor or I would have been mighty disappointed to have paid for it.
A much better manual for much more money can be had from Classic Tractors in the UK. I ordered this and while it took about 8 weeks to get here, I would highly recommend it. It covers all the Standard Motor variants i.e. TEA, TED, TEH etc, etc.

Hi again Barry,
I think those guys are talking about American gallons; you'll only need 5 Imperial. Actually about 22 litres does it nicely.
