I have a '51 Fergie TEA 2085 - bought it with the farm 20 years ago and have used it mostly for drawbar stuff and with a 3ph blade for snow removal. It is a sweet little machine but .... I now have a 5 ft rotary mower (thanks to advice on this site I bought an ORC before hooking up the mower) and, like a ton of bricks, the advantages of "live hydraulics" became crystal clear. There are many places like field corners, rough ground, etc where it would be great to have the PTO still running the mower while using the clutch to slow the tractor, change gears (back up) or ease into a tight spot.

A couple of questions - 1 -if I was to replace my little 2085 with another Fergie what models would give me live hydraulics

2 - with a 2 stage clutch will the lift arms work without the PTO turning (or is that what is called Independent PTO)?

Thanks for any insights.

Bob

Folks: Just to clariify a little more, The TO35 became the MF35 when Massey Harris and Ferguson merged. It's the same tractor(with red paint).

The first Fergie with live hydraulics and independent PTO is the TO-35 and also the F-40. Now, having gotten that answer out of the way, some terms are getting mixed up. Live hydraulics allows you to raise the lift with the clutch depressed. This is different from the two stage clutch and independent PTO. The Ford NAA has live hydraulics but not live/independent PTO nor a two stage clutch, meaning you can raise the lift without turning on the PTO but you cannot run the PTO with the clutch depressed. The Ferg. 35 has the two stage clutch which allows you to stop the tractor by depressing the clutch half way and the tractor will stop but the PTO will continue to turn (if the PTO lever is selected properly). You are correct that these are very desireable features for the reasons you mention. Also, they are desireable for safety reasons. Consider for example that you need to raise your bush hog to get the tractor and hog onto your trailer, but you have to turn the PTO on to raise your hog. With the 35 (or Ford NAA or 600, etc) you can raise it and drive on with the hog off. Hope that helps some. Others can probably explain more clearly than I.
