Follow all the suggestions. Then if you still hate the points, which I do, go to the left and find Genesee Products. Get their electronic ignition system and forget the points forever.

I found a post on this site a while ago with the dimensions of an original hand crank. I will admit I haven't yet bent mine but I am using it as a straight rod with the end ground flat for a wrench to hold on to. Basically, it's a 3/4 inch solid rod (from the hardware store - about $3-4.) and a 5/16 roll pin - length 1-1/4 inches. Drill the hole in the rod 3/4 inch from one end and center the roll pin. A little filing may be necessary to fit it in the front of the engine. Even with just a wrench, it turns the engine easily.

On my TO35 I took a Qtip dabbed in paint and brushed the 6 degree line. I then used a timing light which worked excellent. However did you remove all plugs? To make it easier to turn. Duner has pointed a good method but you could also turn it by grabbing a blade from the fan. Normally at TDC it should turn easily.

Best of luck

If you have found TDC #1 cyl compression stroke and can't get it back to 7 degrees BTDC put tractor in 4th gear and roll tracor back a couple of inches. A cigarette paper between the points will tell you when the points fire. It is just at the moment you can pull it out of the points. Points are good, points are simple, simple is good.
