I looked at a ferguson last night but was not able to determine the model. The one thing that really threw me was it was a 4 speed + reverse and also had a hi and low range making it an 8 speed. Didnt notice anything about such a transmission in anything ive read. Any ideas?

I definitely agree with fergie fan. When I was looking to buy one, this fellow had 2 nearly identical 1959 TO-30's - one with the sherman tranny and one without. I ended up buying the one without, as the one with was in much rougher shape and needed alot more... Anyway, they apparently could be had with a sherman. He may still have that one for all I know.

thanks for the info. I bought the tractor and it does have a 4 speed with what appears to be a sherman. Reason everything i read said they had a 3 speed.

oops, did follow-up in the wrong spot. anyway,i just called the guy. Sn is TO93442 and the motor has a z129 s#333841 on it. Am i correct that this is a 1952 ferguson TO30? still does not answer the 4 forward + reverse and hi low range. Cant remember if the slats run vertical or horizontal. I only remember there is "ferguson" written in the top center of the hood. Thanks for all your help.

Yup, what Fergie Fan said. You have researched it correctly and as he said it apparently has a two speed tranny, which you see on the Fords often but not much on the Fergies. The grille slats will be horizontal. If all works ok it should be a good tractor.

As Paul said, the 35 Deluxe and the 40 have three forward speeds and one reverse with two speed tranny, giving six forward, not eight. The 30 has four forward speeds, but normally no low and hi range, so we are confused. Does the tractor have a serial number plate just above the steering wheel? If so, what is the full number? Does the engine have a number with a prefix like Z129, Z134..., etc.? If so, tell us that. Are you sure it is a Ferguson, not a Ford. Some of the old Fords say "Ferguson System" on the nose. And some of them had the Sherman step up/down tranny, but what confuses me on that is the 9N is a three speed, so that doesn't match, and I don't think the 8N had Ferguson System written on it, although it does have a four speed tranny, so with a Sherman on it that might be what you have. What does the grill look like? Are the slats verticle or horizontal?

Chris, I'm not an expert in Ferguson transmissions but I do know that the TO-35, and F-40s have three-speed plus reverse. It they are deluxe models, they have hi-low range, giving them 6 forward and two reverse speeds. If it is a true "Ferguson" and not a M-F, it might possibly be an industrial model. What is the tractor SN?

Sounds to me that it is a to-35 or mf-35...they're the only ones that had 4 speed and hi-lo range...that look similar to the 30. L8R....Fred OH
