The battery was down on my T0 20 so I took it out to charge it. (6 volt)

I noted the position of the pos and neg posts very carefully. It looks to me like the ground goes to the neg post. This post has a strap that bolts to the dash metal.

The pos line goes to the engine and there are numberous wires going into this general area.

I know they should be pos grounded, but this one was running with neg ground wasn't it??

Could this be possible or has someone done some funny wiring?

Should I hook it back up the way it was or ground it correctly???

George

Sorry guys , but I have a 1952 Fergie that has been negative ground from day one back in 1952 , it still has the original generator , being rebuilt 2 years ago . It is a Standard engine , maybe that makes a difference--- Bill

Bill, someone hooked up the battey backwards on day one then. Throughly read through the link I posted and email the Harry Ferguson club in England(address in on page) if you wish. There are no records of these tractors being designed for neg. ground systems on either continent. They will run wired either way, just reverse the wires on the ammeter and coil.

If you have owned this tractor long enough to know for certain the charging system works hooked up NEG. ground that is the way I would leave it for now. Lots of times the back side of the voltage regulator will tell you if the regulator is NEG. or POS. ground. If someone put in a neg. ground regulator they would have switched the ammeter wires to get it show charge. They also should have reversed the coil wires, On a POS GR. system the PLUS side of coil goes to DIST. On a NEG. GR. system the MINUS side of coil goes to DIST. POSITIVE GR. was the way tractor was delivered new.

Many guys don't know these tractors are positive ground and attach the battery cables wrong. This usually does'nt hurt the tractor, but will ruin the battery if connected wrong over a short time. You will find an original wiring diagram in this website:
