I just purchased a late 40's or early 50's model Ferguson tractor. It is a 4 cylinder, gray, 3 pt. hitch, and p.t.o. I gave $400.00 for it at an estate sale. I was curious as to what kind it was as I am not familiar with Ferguson tractors and how I would find out what year (i.e. where is the tag located that would tell me?). Any info.?

First, we assume it is a Ferguson, not a Ford with Ferguson System. The 9N Ford might have Fergsuon on the front of the hood. Let's assume it is a Ferguson. If so, it should be a four speed with a slot on the gear shift for starting it. That is opposite reverse and requires you pick up slightly on the shift rod. The rivited plate on the dash steering area should have the serial number, as another respondent said. You can use that number, go to the link for serial numbers in the left column on this website, and find the year. If the plate is missing, look at the engine number. I'm assuming it is a U.S. made Fergie with Continental engine. If it begins with Z120... you have a TO-20. If it begins with Z129... you have a TO-30. If it doesn't have either of those numbers, it may be an English Fergie with the Standard engine, so in that event post again and we'll see what you have.

I'm wondering if you put a typo in there. That price seems too good to be true. If its running, you gotta heck of a deal on a tractor. Here in eastern WV, I've seen solid rust sell for a thousand. My '52 TO30 cost 2100.

On the steering column area.
