Differential behaviour

I was towing my parts Fergie across the lawn last night, and wanted to show my son how when you let out the clutch, the engine turns over. (He could see the fan as the hood is off and the gas tank is out too.)
When he let out the clutch the engine turned over all right, but one rear wheel turned frontwards and the other one backwards. I am puzzled (and I also have a torn up lawn). I understand about differentials but surely something is wrong with this scenario?
Please explain ????
Thanks,
Jim W

this is the why it works just jack it up and turn one wheel by hand to the right the other will go left this is because of the spider gears but if it would have diff. lock they would go the same way. it ain't broken your car and truck will do the same any thing with a open rear end

I thought of this, but when you do what you're describing, the motor doesn't turn.
But I have towed cars to start them before and both rear wheels have moved frontwards and sometimes the motor has even started.
