I guess one problem leads to another. I took my carb apart last night and cleaned it and put it back on from advise I got from this site. There was a ton of crap in there. I decided to try and start the tractor and it rolled over a few times then nothing. I thought that maybe I run the battery down so I boosted it with the truck. Apparently the battery was fine, because all of a sudden smoke started to roll out of the starter. Have a burnt it up? (the starter that is) Are replacement starters available? Again I must convey to you guys, Im still learning about this tractor, costly as it may sound. But I am having a blast with it, even tho its costing me a few $$$$$$$$$

OK so what colour is it? I have a non-grey unit and have been trying to figure out why to no avail.

Barry, If you did smoke the starter it's not because you put 12 volts on a 6 volt starter. When you convert to 12v from 6v you don't have to change the starter. A starter is a high current high torque motor. The windings are not heavy enough to leave in the circuit for long periods of time or many repeated starts in short time. Put your hand on the starter after repeated attempts to start and you'll feel what I mean.

I assume you hooked the jump battery to your battery and attemted to start with the shifter correct? Did you continue to crank for an extended time?
Does the starter try to turn with the jump after it cooled down? Smoke doesn't mean it's shot, you just put a few years on it! You can pull it easy enough and your nose will tell you if it's burnt..believe me.
Hope it helps.
Good luck,
Joe in NY

You sure create quite a fuss on the web page. When I was down looking at you funny colored 2085 I told you I had the name of a parts supply outfit out of western Ontario. They actually have a small catologue of TEA 2085 parts. Call them and they will mail it out.

Lynnville Farm Equipment
808 Regional Rd. #4

The list of parts it pretty good and the prices seem fair.

see ya soon.

Barry, what year is your 20-85? Early models used a 6 volt pos-ground electrical system. It may be possible that the starter was replaced with an earlier 6 volt starter and used with a 12 volt system. Most rebuilders would have no trouble re-manufacturing the starter for you. When you get it back it will give many years of service.

Barry, Your "52" should be a 20-85 and it would have a 12volt pos ground system.

One of the differentiators between a 6v and a 12v 20-85 is the size of the starter hole in the block. If you know it's a 52 then that would make it a 12v, so a 6 v starter from a TEA wouldn't fit. Who knows, a 6v starter from something else might...
If you have a UAP nearby give them a call and they'll probably recommend somewhere nearby.

Yup, take it to a local alternator/generator/starter shop; they will be able to deal with it. I had mine done not too long ago; it needed a field coil and they told me that even if there weren't any around they could get one made for it for about $40. Mine even had a bent shaft and they straightened it.
More fun and more $.
